BBC News - American tourist gang-raped in India

The article says that the rapes rarely happen to foreigners.

Well, I think the foreigner rapes are those that make the news the most often and there have been more than enough of those recently.

They are even raping women with a male escort, so if you ever visit India go with and stay with a group.

My better half read that tourism in India is down.
He also read that the perps have been caught.

The government had better take this seriously and stop it because tourism does bring a lot of money into the country.

Again, rapes happen everywhere, everyday. it is horrible and it just goes to show people we have to be very careful, but it shouldn't affect people's travels. Heck, in France you have to watch your purse every minute cause the pick pockets are everywhere, but we still travel to France. In Panama, most cruise lines suggest you do not travel away from the port terminal unless you are with a cruise tour, but we still cruise to Panama.

Let's not let one or two incidents stop us from enjoying the world.

As you may know, if you are in the business, in India it has not been only one or two instances. Rape has been an ongoing problem for Indian women and now they are branching out in this bad behavior to rape strangers in their country as well.

Indian women have been complaining of shoddy police response for decades (perhaps centuries). It is just now starting to get international media attention due to tourists being so attacked. Let's hope the police learn to respond immediately, rather than hours later. Let's hope the perps actually get a trial, because not too long ago they were not. Let's hope they stay imprisoned for a very long time, because not too long ago the Indian solution, to save the woman's honor, was to force her to marry her rapist.

India is seeing a drop in tourism. I say, good, if it helps the poor women of this country to live as free citizens. Sometimes the only way to make them see the light of day is to hit them in the pocketbook.

I am not one for blaming the victim, but, just how stupid can a person be?

India has always had a serious problem with rape and general treatment of women, it is ingrained into many people to act this way. People here in the US and other places do not understand because the Indian community here is great, a very different group than the hundreds of millions over in India with a less than stellar background.

India has never had a strong tourism industry, so this will not hurt it much, but it sure will not help build it.

Basic safety and common sense will take someone a long way in India. I will say the place is almost predictable.

I would like to visit India some day. The Indian men with whom I have worked have never demonstrated this perverted way of looking at women. The women have been intelligent, responsible, and unafraid of expressing themselves. Since the issue has not gotten much press in the past, I was unpleasantly surprised to hear of this ongoing situation of rape and either cover up or apathy by officials.

I did read somewhere that their tourism industry was affected which is causing the government to take notice. Maybe what is not a lot of money to us is fairly significant to them.

I also read that they caught the guys who did this. I hope the police are not so concerned to blame someone that they were not careful that they have the right people.

India is a really interesting country to see, and a completely different world.. but their culture is just.. just... no

I think Americans need to be careful no matter where they travel in the world. We are not the most liked tourists any longer. In fact there are lots of tourists who get themselves into trouble in cities like New York or LA. Personally I would avoid many of these other countries simply because of crime or poverty. Go with a group and stay close together is about the only way to travel.

Another rape in Vanuatu:

Solomon Islander Facing Rape Charges in Vanuatu - Solomon Times Online

Do you think there is a country in which rapes do not occur? Or that there is anything unique or unusual about rape in India?

Rapes are like muggings or any other kinds of assaults or personal attacks that involve strangers outside the home -- almost all of them occur because the victim is not being cautious or prudent enough for the circumstances. For example, a great majority of them occur in or around or in association with places where people are drinking alcohol or using recreational drugs. Such places and people are easy to avoid.
