Why do they take such a hike in the summer? Its pathrtic, i priced bfs to ewr for march and it is £350. Now in july it is like £1200. I think that is a ripp off, continental economy service is not worth that.
We are thinking about heading over (not via london we refuse to add 2 hours onto a 7 hour journey). Where can we find the cheapest flights?

I would love to get it for £500.
it is called supply and demand. The heavy travel season is from late May to mid Sept. The airlines will get what they can and if you want to travel during high season you will have to pay for it. The cruises are the same. A$1500 a person cabin in July might be a $900 cabin during the off season, the same goes for hotels.
They aren't increasing the price in the summer. That is the price. In the winter when prices are lower, they are offering bargains to try to keep the seats filled. Better to fly with all the seats filled, even if that is at a discount.
They don't have to discount in the summer because vacationers are filling the seats.
If you are coming to the USA, there are many locations where the weather during the winter is quite nice. So if you want cheap airfare, plan for a winter trip.
Summer = high season. Prices are up. Try to go in between seasons, but the prices are ridiculous high anyway. However, traveling is way cheaper in Europe than the US.
Look at other airports in the US. LGA, JFK, PHL are all within 90 minutes of EWR. Fly midweek. If you aren't willing to be flexible, then the price is going to be higher. That's just the way it is. When I went to Europe last year I flew there on a Thursday and came home on a Monday to avoid the higher weekend fares.
