Even though it is still hurricane season, I love heading down to the southern NC coast or the SC coast that time of year. Outside of rare tropical weather systems, the weather is generally excellent in the fall. Of my many fall trips to that region, only one time have I ever encountered a tropical system, and it was only a tropical storm that lasted a day or so, followed by stunning weather for the remainder of our trip.
We're heading to Curacao at the end of this September, though, specifically to get down to the Caribbean but to avoid the hurricane belt.
If you have ever wanted to visit Southern Europe Sept/Oct would be the best time. Should be pretty well empty and still warm enough to enjoy the sea and beach. Prices should be slashed too. Of course, you can say the same for the Caribbean.
I went to Orange Beach, Alabama. It was 2 years ago, in October. It was great, tourist season was over. But, it was still warm enough to spend time on the beach.
