All the major US airlines I have flown still give peanuts/pretzels and Jetblue actually has awesome free snacks. International airlines I've flown provide meals still..even on short flights (<2 hours)
Nope. Flew United to Aruba in June and they provided nothing other than a nonalcoholic drink....and that's on a 4.5 hour international flight.

I have never had bad experience on Spirit...in fact, my husband and I don't have to sit together and I never pay for a seat before we go.. I don't care where I sit....somehow when we checked in, the seats on Spirit were always next to each other...just feel that is a big waste of money...

I flew USAir PHX-ORD and received no free food, only drinks. Most airlines, other than Southwest, charge for all food these days.
As one who flies out of the NYC area, I have yet to find that Spirit Airlines is anything more than a ripoff; you pay more and get less. For instance (and I've found similar results true multiple times), searching for a roundtrip NYC to MSY September 3 - 10, Spirit is charging $303, while I'm finding $242 via United. Not to mention the United flight lets me bring on a free carry-on IN ADDITION TO a free personal item (Spirit lets you bring on a free personal item only). Perhaps people are finding better deals, comparatively, with Spirit in other parts, but I have been severely disappointed with Spirit's pricing where I am now.

because I am insured... I fly Spirit (a.k.a "Hobo Air") $23.10 legs all the time. (Big sale yesterday)
Dress for the trip... 4 layers of clothes if staying 4 days (no extra fees)
Usually I just stay one day and fly home that night ($23.10 is cheaper than a hotel!).
What SCARES me is that on 60% empty flights Spirit packs the rear of the plane and the front is empty. (they claim for 'safety regulations')
A-319's are not my favorite... the scroll compressor in upper fuselage sounds like they are winding the rubber band...as we taxi away from the gate. It only goes 'downhill' from there
It is ez to pick out the spirit flight crew... they are the frumpy grumpy Chicago gang kids wearing the parachutes, and sitting in the emergency exit row.

That sucks. I still have yet to experience anything that bad thankfully...only maybe twice ever (including a couple weeks ago) where my flight was so short that they said drinks and snacks were by request only. And it worked cause I didnt feel like requesting...
Spirit and Frontier fall into the same category.. With Southwest doing so as well, but, they do things so differently (and better, normally) that it's not really fair to lump them in.
Spirit and Frontier will nickle and dime you to death. You have to know and understand what you're getting into with them.
Let's take this.. ATL to LAS RT 11/8 to 11/13.. Cheapest you can do is basically late night depart, red eye return, and they're nonstops.. About $166.
Southwest, best price is about $320.. Much nicer flights, tho.. nonstops, Depart 8am from ATL, and 3pm from LAS.
But, you're taking 2 checked bags.. That adds another $84 to the Spirit ticket. So, it's now $250.. only saving $70.
Now, your flight is cancelled. Both Spirit and Southwest will only put you on their flights.. Spirit has 7 flights a day to get to Vegas, but you're on the last one, so.. Next day at best. Southwest, there's 18 flights per day, you're on the third. So, there's 15 other opportunities to get there same day.
Southwest also doesn't charge for ticket changes. Spirit, it's over $100.
If you know how to play the Spirit game, you can get a great deal out of them. But you have to know how to play the game. I'd never book a ticket with them for a route that only flies a few times a week or has only 1 flight a day.. Such as Myrtle Beach to Atlantic City. 1 flight, departs at 9:26pm..
