In recent years, there have been three places I setttld into the same hotel for over a week, rather than traveling about -- Colombo Sri Lanks, Karakol Kyrgyzstan, and Dire Dawa Ethiopia.

Perugia in Umbria for about eight or nine days. A few years later i went back and stayed another four days. These old Italian hill towns are interesting and Perugia pre-dates the Romans. I usually stay a week in one place.

I think I've finally thought of how to word the question that I answered in post 31:

"What's the longest you ever stayed in a hotel you originally booked for only one night?"

That sounds neat, could you expand on how it works a bit?

TRADITIONAL Home exchange is when we stay at their house while we stay in theirs. No cash is exchanged. We usually don't meet the other party. We have done about 16 of these in the last 10 years, ranging from 4 days to 3 months. In many places in the U.S. as well as international locations including the Canary Islands and Cape town, South Africa. A few of our exchanges included cars and pets.

Many of the home exchange sites are morphing into less traditional exchange types. Using a point system instead of a simultaneous exchange. Requiring damage deposits and damage insurance. Requiring a cleaning fee. We've always handled these issues ourselves, so I'm not very happy with these new models.

Eh, 2 1/2 weeks in Phoenix during December 2017.

Did it again in December 2018 but now we live here in our own house instead of a hotel.

My biggest frustration when traveling is never being able to spend much time in one place. I'm definitely not the "If This is Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium" kind of traveler. When our current feline goes to the Great Catnip Patch in the Sky, we'll be doing some extended stays in the U.K. I would love to do house exchanges, only I'm afraid I would have to write a 50-page manual on how to get things to work in this new home. The previous owner loved gadgets and home automation.

USA is the only place I've seen a sink garbage disposal, I imagine it would be entertaining seeing foreign guests figure that one out.

and... watching USA folks try to start a gas refrigerator... or dress a 'fresh' chicken brought home from the wet market.

How long away / stay?

'Years' if possible!

make it last

What's at home? (more lawn to mow )

Lots of teachers / profs do home exchange. Seems to work out well if you have an extra beach house or mtn cabin.

Are gas fridges common? I suspect the majority of homes in USA have a garbage disposal so it would be quite common for foreigners to encounter one if they rented a home, is there someplace where everyone has gas fridges?

No idea where you're going with the chicken thing either.

When I went Australia to visit a friend. My original plan was to stay for a month but I ended up staying and leaving on the last day of validity of my 6 months visa at that time.
