Airplanes are FULL of people who don't like flying.
When you think about it, crowding into an aluminium cylinder with a bunch of strangers to be hurtled 1000s of feet through the air DOES sound kinda funky.
However the fact remains she's far more likely to die in her car so...I suggest hypnotherapy, if she's really bad.
Or, just deal with it. Like half the other passengers are doing.
Is there a friend going on the trip who she could tell regarding her fears and who she could sit with? Being with friend or loved one can help prevent panic attacks. If possible I would also suggest taking some short plane rides to start getting used to it, and then gradually increase the length. Also seeing a therapist who specializes in this problem. It is actually rather common, and there is excellent treatment. Hope this helps a little, and Best Wishes!
I would imagine if someone experiences severe (as in actual severe, where even the pilot and FAs are a bit unnerved) like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3rTVFB5r8E
That can certainly make someone who is not in love with flying to be much more hesitate and fearful.
I've flown many many times, and I don't I've ever had severe turbulence...maybe a few moderate ones that lasts for <1min. I'm already a queasy guy so I am simply waiting for the day when I do get to experience severe turbulence...now that would be a heck of a ride.
Definitely flying with loved ones makes it better.
If she lives near Connecticut, I'd be glad to take her up for a quick flight in a Cessna 172 or similar, where she could actually put her hands on the controls and fly the plane.
As crazy as this sounds, I've heard that on certain people it has worked wonders in very quickly erasing their fear of flying. Not only that, but a few of these people even went on to take flying lessons and earn their private pilot certificate!!!!
