I'm planning a vacation for my Mom and I the end of July/beginning of August. My Mom hates really hot weather so I'm not sure where to take her in AUGUST! We can only go at this time b'c that's when I'll have a break from school. Any suggestions? There are lots of places I want to go but as foar as fair weather places for that time of year, I'm at a loss.

The only thing on my plate is a train tour in Canada. It's goin to cost $2K+ for just 5 days so I'm trying to think of something a little cheaper and will be around 7 days. Any suggestions I will appreciate - US or abroad. Thanks!

Lake Tahoe. WONDERFUL and BEAUTIFUL! If mom is into cars then she will REALLY be in luck. Reno hosts Hot August Nights in August. We spent an entire day in Reno walking around checking out all of the cars and even though the temp was supposedly 92 it was not too bad and I never broke a sweat. There are tons of other car clubs in the area during this time and many stay up around Lake Tahoe. It is also the time they have the BEAUTIFUL wooden boats on display at the lake. They are STUNNING those teak boats. Even though it is warm down in Reno it is down right chilly at night near the lake. When we were there two years ago in August it was around 28-32 in the mornings (BRRRRRRRRRRRRR). I had to buy a jacket. The afternoons were wonderful and we were in shorts and short sleeves. There are a ton of outdoor things to do. You can rent bicycles and there are bike paths in South Lake Tahoe. On the north shore there is a really nice beach. Like being at the beach right in the mountains. You can parasail (did this there and loved it and did not have to get in the water like you do at the ocean). Visit Squaw Valley and take the gondola to the top to the Olmpic Village. You can ice skate on the top of the mountain and one side is open to the view. Eat lunch up there. Take your swimsuit if you want and hang out at the pool at the top of the mountain. Stunning views. You can go river rafting. Not sure if mom is into a lot of outdoor activities but you can be as active as you want or just hang out in the crisp beautiful sunshiney sky and soak it all in.

OOOOH, that DOES sound like fun! Unfortunately, when I say "vacation", I really mean like doing "touristy" type stufff. Tahoe definitely sounds like something Hubby and I would enjoy though. Never been to Tahoe ... I didn't think there would be that much stuff to do!! Thanks for the input!

Oh, there is TONS TO DO!!!!!! You can go to the casinos in South Lake Tahoe. Gamble and catch a show. They get some pretty good top acts (Sammy Hagar goes there to his club, Cabo Wabo). There is a beautiful golf course on the shores of the lake. You can stay at a place as rustic or as 5 star as you want. Harrah's in Tahoe is one of the best rooms I've ever been in. Each room has a his and hers bathroom. Then the beautiful views out each window. There is Emerald Bay. You can only get to it two ways, boat or walking/hiking down a steep 2 mile path. Waterfalls can be seen from the road along the way driving around the lake. The Dixie Queen leaves out of Elk Grove on the east side of the lake and goes across the lake and around Emerald Bay and back. You can take day, dinner or night cruises. There are boat and jet ski rentals. TONS of "touristy" stuff too. That place is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Eat at the seafood place in the marina down in South Lake Tahoe. Go on a fishing trip (WEE early mornings). Catch some salmon and trout. They will filet it for you. You can grill it out yourself for dinner if you stay at a place like a condo or cabin. Man, nothing like eating fresh grilled salmon that was just caught. We then packed it up in a cooler w/ dry ice and found a mail/post store and shipped the rest back home. On the days we are going to drive around the lake we pack an ice chest w/ drinks and sandwich stuff. Find a nice place to have lunch on the shores as there are PLENTIFUL and so wonderful

It is one of those places everyone needs to see at least once in their lifetime.

LOL!!!! I know, I know. Our first trip there was staying at Harrah's. Hubby won enough to pay for our trip . Second time we rented this neat little cabin that was in a little community right on the lake w/ a few other cabins that people lived in. Had their own private boat slips. It was HEAVEN!!! I was 7 mo pregnant and we had our then 4 year old with us. Two years ago w/ both kids in tow we rented a condo up in the Kings Beach area on the north side. It was not lake front but had a nice balcony and was only a mile from the beach on the lake. They seriously treat the shores of that lake like a REAL beach. Kind of the best of all worlds. This was the place I woke up FREEZING my hiney off. It was a tri level w/ the master and bath on the bottom floor along w/ the thermostat. Second floor was living/kitchen and 3rd floor was sleeping loft. They were burning up and sweating up there and I was an ice cube down below. I was sleeping in several layers I swear. LOL!!!

There are several casino's along the shores all on the Nevada side. My favorite is Harrah's. They have a restaurant on the top floor w/ windows all around to see out. Oh, there are several sites that have a live webcam. One is virtual tahoe dot com. Of course your not going to see all of that snow in August but up high in the mountains you can see a few small patches.

Where are you from? If you are on the east coast I would do the Adirondacks in NY, Maine, NH, and or VT. A lot of the mountainous areas are cooler. There is also gambling close to the NY/Canadian border.

Take a cruise from Seattle to Alaska. Lots of touristy things to do, ship fun plus gambling on the ship if you like. It's nice and cool in Alaska in Aug.

Nitram - Yeah, we did Alaska a couple of years ago. We LOVED IT. That's why the train ride from Vancouver to Calgary is on the top of our list. Canada is BEAUTIFUL.

YoungLisa - We live in Phoenix but moved here a year ago from upstate New York. The Adirondacks ARE beautiful!!

Well don't bring her to Texas in August if she doesn't like heat Try Maggie Valley North Carolina, it's in the mountains and doesn't get too hot and I think it's beautiful.
