I forgot to add that most of my international travel has been solo. While traveling with friends and family is certainly fun and enjoyable (and I may even prefer it at times), I don't like planning around other people.

Live below your means. Spend less than you earn on day-to-day living. Then, you will always have money readily available for life's simple pleasures.

Traveling alone is now much easier than it every was. Hostels are popping up everywhere. For about ten to twenty bucks a night, you get a bed in a dorm room, with other travelers, who are sociable and fascinating wanderers full of information about where they've been, and often ready and willing to hang out for a few days with a new acquaintance.

Yup. I would never plan a trip with someone else, especially an international one. People I know don't have the same travel style that I do.

I don't spend it on drinking and indulging myself. People criticize me but don't realise they could do the same thing.

You have to be passionate.

+1 this is what I do. I put away £200 a month sometimes more, it gets me a decent 2/3 week holiday sometimes long haul.

Anyone can do it.

I always laugh at people who are shocked at my budget or who wonder how I can afford it. Typically it is people who go on mini trips constantly or who buy expensive luxury items.

You cannot have both, either you go on holiday or shop. The important thing to remember is that you live below you're means and try and reduce the price of groceries etc.

Bostons hostels are 75$ a night. South Florida/Tampa/Key West are 35$. Hostels are expensive. The cheap ones are always full. Nyc had a huge bedbug breakout problem and closed down a lot of hostels. You will die on Mcdonalds food. I get sick on it even temporarily.

How they do it in Portland and Seattle is they're staying at the Mens Mission. They won't tell you this. Women don't have this option. Mat on the floor. Out by 630am. Or sleeping in the bushes. If you're a young male def expect to be hit on a lot and pimped out. Same with women. Portland and Seattle are almost impossible to travel in cheaply now due to the very high numbers of interested people.

Hostels in Boston are not $75 a night. At any rate, hostels can go up to $50 a night at hostels in the most expensive cities in the world...such as NYC and Sydney. I paid $10-12 a night at awesome hostels in certain parts of Europe. Pricing goes by the area. And one does not need to stick to fast food in order to travel cheaply. Hostels are expensive in the USA though...I'll give you that. But hostels also aren't very popular here.

So many inaccuracies in one post. You can travel cheaply in those cities, it's just a matter of knowing how...and it doesn't involve sleeping in a cheap place.
