I'm perplexed! I see lot of Hotels in Cairo at nha khoa Travel Directions. I pick is some of them here. I really don’t know what is the best for us.
We are a middle aged couple and would like to stay in a nice area near transportation to the city center. I have heard of the four or so major areas (Giza-Heliopolis - Zamalak(?)- Mohamadeen(?) which is fine and good but I have no idea if there are restaurants, shops and transportation nearby. And where is the underground I have heard of? And if you can, which middle to better hotels are in the areas you think are best for us considering my needs. You can review below list

Are you aware of the best resource in the world? TripAdvisor.com. It's a venue where real travelers report their real experiences at accommodations, restaurants, and everything available for travelers all over the world. The site's software calculates the order in which contributors rate various aspects of each hotel or ride, etc. Where available, TA includes prices. So you can make comparisons and choose -- at least make a short list of two or three choices. In the left column you'll find every kind of attraction available. Street maps are also available. In the reviews of each item, travelers often mention nearby attractions and resources.

Baher is right: the Meridien is a gorgeous hotel (and I went there one day just to use their pool and to have the pyramids in the distanct), but it's far from town.
I liked the Sheraton. I think it's Mohandeseen. The grounds are nice and the staff were wonderful. We went during ramadan, so there was a REALLY nice free breakfast buffet. The rooms are sweet and the shampoo, shower stuff and other goodies are top of the line. The Sheraton also accepts AAA, but they have a club can get points for and you can probably use them any where in the world.
One thing, I would not recommend driving in Cairo if you're fainthearted.
Also be prepared for the polluted air in the city. To me it was unbelievable. I had to talk myself into breathing at one point. The husband and I smoked and drank EXTRA hard when we were there. I mean, there was nothing we could do that could compete with the dust, fumes and smog in the air. I would recommend some day trips to other places.
Maybe Marina, Sharm El sheikh or Alexandria.
Also DO NOT USE the public transport in Cairo. I would recommend renting a car. Make sure you increase the life insurance policy before you leave the US, though.
Also you can walk to restaurants and other places from the hotel. But I believe you will miss that "I almost died in a foreign country" experience if you don't drive in Egypt. LOL. I would really recommend getting a map and learning some phrases in Arabic.
The staff at the hotel is well educated and their English is great. They can definitely help you find any amenities that are closeby. We drove almost everywhere because my husband is Egyptian. LOL If they have a choice they will drive because it's Chic I guess.
But there are not only restaurants but stands where you can buy cool street food near within walking distance of the hotel.

Lol! Please, you don't need to be the driver to feel that you "almost died in a foreign country"! Just being a passenger is enough. Frankly, crossing the street is enough! lol!
I was there in July and didn't experience too much hardship with the air, although I was in a car usually. the biggest problem for me was the heat, but at least it was dry heat.
