Best time in my opinion is late spring May to April, not as busy as August. I've also enjoyed late September in Tuscany. Lucky for me I know people there so I'm often able to stay with friends, but will stay at small hotels and once even stayed at the Hotel Lungarno in Florence.

Where do I begin about The whole Tuscany region? So much to say and gush about. Most important RENT a car and discover it yourself, it's heaven on earth.

Agree.
Just avoid spring break, it can be crazy.
We enjoyed the Maremma, southern Tuscany, quite a bit.
