My husband and I are considering moving to the Tri-Cities in the fall of 2008. I will graduate about that same time with an entry-level master's in education (certified PK - 6). Does anyone have information on the demand for elementary teachers there? I know the area is growing, but I also know that WSU has some educational programs that supply new teachers.

Teaching in a private school and/or teaching part-time are welcome options. I'm more looking to get some experience at this point than needing a sizable (in teacher's terms!) salary to pay the rent.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

tcres links to the school district websites are your best bet for job postings otherwise WorkSource might have some. Pasco School District tends to pay more but does have a strong need for bilingual teachers. With the huge growth going on right now in TC there has to be demand. W/ our biz we are seeing a huge influx of people moving in from all over the country and it hasn't been slowing at all. The cost of living is so low here you should have no problem making it on a teaching salary. Easier to survive here than most places. You should be able cover rent and probably buy a house. The Mid-Columbia Library system is a great resource and I've seen great parent and community support given to schools in general. Levy's get passed for anything having to do with our kids, its just supremely family oriented here. A breath of fresh air compared to big cities or depressed areas.

TessyNJohn,

I asked my son, a 2nd-year music teacher in the area. Washington has reciprocity agreements with some states, though I suspect less likely with one so far away. Otherwise, you would have to take the WEST-B and possibly WEST-E tests (Washington Educator Skills Tests Home Page) and apply for a Washington State Teaching Certificate. My son said the WEST-B was very easy, but he felt a little cheated on the WEST-E. It is specialty-specific and asked questions that simply weren't part of his state university curriculum (Go cougs!), though he still passed it no problem.

Let me know if you have other questions I can pass along...

HeyMikey

If you are certified in more than one state, check each for reciprocity. I got my original license from a state back east from which I graduated college. They were supposed to have reciprocity with WA, both state's literature said so. I applied, got turned down. I happened to have a license from another state, re-applied using that license...got my WA license. Things that make you go hmmmm...

Good luck!
