It has about the same murder rate as the two largest cities in the Canadian province of Ontario: Toronto and Ottawa.

No, the official results used for comparison purposes and used by the FBI is 762. There are a lot of unofficial sites like heyjackass that people use that are always higher as they include things like self defense killings, justified police shootings and unintended traffic deaths. Those aren't included per FBI stats.

I would say the areas of the west side are worse than the bad areas on the south side. As I said around 75% of murders happen in areas with 25% of the population because the areas with the highest number of killings have the lowest population densities for the most part. My neighborhood of Lakeview has around 100,000 residents and had one murder this year. Two old men who had been fighting for years got into a tussle with each other and one killed the other. Sad and unfortunate, but didn't really terrorize the neighborhood like what happens on the south and west sides where it's kids running around with guns shooting. I've never felt unsafe in my 15 living from the south loop up through downtown and Lincoln park and lakeview. I also loved Logan square when I lived there! Beautiful neighborhood!

Grand Rapids murders up slightly from last year; nine of 12 deaths involved a gun | WZZM13.com

Grand Rapid's lowest yearly count was 6 in 2014. The highest was 34 in 1993.

Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not okEast St. Louis seems to be the winner(or loser depending how you look at it) with a murder rate of 71 per 100.000 residents.

Maybe not. Looks like Chester, PA may be at a rate of 76 per 100,000 residents in 2016. Camden, NJ looks like it may be at 72 per 100,000 residents in 2016.
