Anyone else noticed the helicopters flying all over Tucson downtown area around 2-4 am last night? Who do they belong to? I sleep with the window open and noticed them fly back and forth several times... Flying very low too it seems.. I also noticed a weird smell coming from outside, not sure if it was from the choppers..but maybe they are spraying the city with some bug repellent spray?

can't say for sure, but TPD will put helicopters over an area if a prowler/burglar/assaulter is in the area and on the loose...always in coordination with ground cops....pretty common....

the smell may have been burned fuel from the copters, maybe....

curious, now, what the issue was at that time...I don't think they would've sprayed for bugs early on a Sunday and wake up everybody!!!

OUCH, Pete . . . when I awoke this morning I thought it had been a bad dream.

I agree with the others so far . . . it must have been either Tucson Police or Pima County Sheriff's Deputies looking for something and/or someone. Those buggers always make lots of racket but at that hour of the night / morning it just seems to be much worse.

I lived on the west side of Downtown for several years, and the ghetto birds were a regular visitor. They would often hover over the old quarry near A Mountain, where a lot of jackasses would go to pop off rounds indiscriminately. City living, get used to it.

Default Missed your posts

Glad to see you on the forum again.I missed your insightful and always thoughtful and substantive contributions. As one who grew up in Chicago, helicopters ,ambulances and patrol cars punctuated the nights regularly with their horns, sirens and roaring engines. My time in Tucson seems like an oasis of quiet and calm by comparison.

They don't do mosquito fogging or other bug spraying from helicopters. I doubt the smell and the helicopters (which were almost certainly law enforcement) had anything to do with each other.

considering everyones comments i guess it was law enforcement Maybe no one even sprays for bugs in tucson? I just remember when I was a kid living in a very humid part of the country that the city used to drive trucks and spray the neighborhoods for bugs.. that's what the smell reminded me of few nights ago. Though probably was something else and not from the helicopter

Many Cities and Towns in other parts of the country, especially in the East and Southeast, spray either from the air or from "Fogging Trucks" but, to my knowledge, Tucson does not.

Flying insects except during the Monsoon Season are relatively non-existent plus we have an ample supply of Mother Nature's bug control experts . . . LIZARDS.

Possibly were you smelling the exhaust from the choppers?
