Tucson temps. (Phoenix, Marana: renting, house, airport)

We're coming to Tucson for the first time in 3 wk. & are renting a house with pool. Will it be necessary to heat the pool? I'm wondering how hot/cool it gets at night up in the mts. (house is at 1,000'). Really looking forward to the trip. The pictures on this site are awesome! Thanks in advance.

Where in Tucson, Marty?

I believe the lowest elevation for the Tucson area is down by Tucson International Airport and that's about 2500'.

As far as the weather is concerned . . . expect temperatures in the 70's and 80's by day while dropping down in the 40's and possibly lower at night. That's much too cold for most Natives to swim, however, for anyone from the Far North maybe not.

At this time of year, the temps don't get warm enough during the day to warm a pool and keep it warm. You'll probably want to heat it. Also, Bummer's right. I don't know of anywhere in this area less than about 2500' in elevation.

The house is in the mts. near Gates Pass. I understood it was at 1,000' but maybe it's 1,000' above Tucson. So that'd be 3500', I guess. (-: I thought we *might* need to heat the pool, so thanks for confirming that. Looking forward to some sun. Terrible winter this year, too much snow!

Yeah Marty - the others are right. Phoenix is at about 1,000 feet, but Tucson is at around 2,400 - and higher in the foothills area and in the Tucson Mountains. I think your thought that it's a 1,000 higher than Tucson sounds about right for Gates Pass. So 3,500 feet sounds about right. Expect temps there to be about 3-4 degrees cooler than Tucson proper since there's generally a 1 degree temperature loss for every 250-300 feet or so.

Be prepared for Lots of Sun but no "skinny dipping" unless the pool is heated.

I had a pool at a house I owned years ago, while it was not necessary to have a heater connected to the pool, we did own a solar cover which helped a lot in getting it a little warmer.. usually we would swim in the pool from March/April to Oct/Nov. Depending on the weather trends. Of course it was a little cool getting in, but with the hot sun, it made up for it

Thanks everyone. Definitely like a warm pool, so we'll go for the heat. There's a solar blanket, too, so we should be ok. I expect we'll be busy most days seeing the sights, anyway. Are there good 4wd trails close to Tucson? What about petroglyph sites, always like to see them when in the SW.

LOL... No skinny dipping for me... so I'll spare my neighbors the suffering!

Marana is actually the lowest elevation in the Tucson area, hence the reason it's almost always 3-4 degrees warmer than Tucson proper most days. Still, for the OP, I recommend a heated pool. It's been a pretty cool spring by Tucson standards. Even this week we're supposed to get some days only around 60.
