Hi! I had a couple of questions about Edison HS:

--Is it hard to get into the magnet if you live within the HS boundaries? What sort of grades/test scores are we talking?

--If a child went to a private elementary (Marquette), would that put them at a disadvantage in the magnet application process, assuming they were still living within the boundaries?

--How does this work at the middle school level--I read something about placement starting in 6th grade. Or are 6th-8th grades combined?

--What elementary schools are ok in the Midtown area? I've heard Lee mentioned often, but looking at its boundaries, it's not hard to tell that the majority of the students are coming from a high income area. What about the elementary that feeds Bryn Mawr (Lanier), Patrick Henry, and Eliot? How different of a level are they on from Lee? How would you compare them to an elementary in Jenks or Union?

Thanks so much!

I can answer these.

1) if you live in Edison district, it will be easier to get into the magnet program. There is a community preference as your child will attend there anyways in the community program. Edison is dual track where common classes (PE, eg) are taught together. Teachers teach both magnet and community classes so either way, your child will have some of the better teachers in the district.

2) Placement is at 6th grade when middle school begins. Edison has the advantage of having both the MS and HS in one building. It’s nice if you live in district as you can become accustomed to going to the same location for the next 7 years.

3) Lee is the big name elementary as it has the Maple Ridge area of town where most of the Millionaires live. Patrick Henry is a great school as well and gets a more diverse mix of students. Lanier does ok but has more lower and middle income students than Patrick Henry.

If you chose to live in Edison district, the only elementary to stay away from is Wright. That school is more binary (upper middle class or flat broke, no middle) and doesn’t have great test scores. The building was built in the 70s and has round classrooms. Not great. We made sure our younger daughter could stay at Patrick Henry when we moved into Wright’s district. It was her last year and we drove her to school. Small price to pay.
