Why have TV shows pertaining to jail and prison become so popular. The prison episodes on MSNBC are the most depressing thing on TV that I can imagine. On TruTV there is Inside American Jail and I believe there is one on the Discovery Channel too. I am sure there is others that I have never seen either. But why are people so interested? Does it have to do with the US obsession with crime?

I love these shows. I guess for me they are popular because they show a part of society that is dysfunctional and almost unbelieveable. In addition these shows are a reality of life these days. I became even more interested after I unfortunately dated an ex con and got introduced into this underground society by mistake. It is quite fascinating, but very mystyfying to the lawabiding person. I am fascinated by the psychology of criminals mostly.
I don't see the point of these programs either. You can't believe a word most convicts say; why would it be any different when they have a TV camera pointed in their faces?
Maybe its because most people are law abiding citizens who feel doing crime is bad and criminals should be punished. So its a way to see whats going to happen if you do wrong. I like the show about the kids who get caught with drugs in foreign countries, and how bad the jails are compared to the US. Those are shot when the camera is there so I bet theyve been cleaned up. And that preppy van der Sloot kid is going to be in a Peruvian jail.
I know that punk Joran is already playing Victim, saying he did not understand Spanish blah, blah and he was forced to speak. What an idiot. He most definitely not ever get out of that jail! I hope those rats eat him, the ones coming out of the so called toilet! UGH. I got this off of Nancy Grace, one of my Fav Shows. I guess I am a crime junkie, that is what they call people who love jail shows etc.

Most of those prisons in Central and South America make the jails here in the US look like country clubs. Some of the prisons are actually run on the inside by the prisoners with appointed leaders of their sectors with prisoners carrying guns.
I love watching prison shows. I find the societies and mindsets inside jail interesting. It is also interesting how each jail is run differently. I don't believe 90% of what the inmates say and of course they are going to complain about how the screws treat them.
I also like watching the Breakout show on NatGeo. Locked Up Abroad is usually good, too.

I watch all of those as well, bs13690! Sometimes, MSNBC can be too gritty for me. It reminds me why we need prison. Most of these guys are complete animals.
