I'm hearing this sound on a bunch of TV shows that I watch and apparently others have heard it as well.

Here's an example that someone recorded:

Strange noise on AMC - YouTube

Listen very carefully at the 12 second and 17 second mark. It's about 8 tones.

I've heard this sound on Fringe, Last Resort, Covert Affairs, and the last Australian Tennis Open. It plays throughout the broadcast.

During Covert Affairs (the most recent episode) it sounds very drawn out and not as distinct but still there. Also, during the last Australian Open people were apparently calling CBS as the sound was VERY audible since tennis matches are quiet. John McEnroe said on-air that people were calling in about it but the sound was not on their end. The sound was exactly like at the link above but loud.

Anyone else hear this? I find it annoying now and distracting. It is not my TV or in my head as the recording about demonstrates this. If you don't think you hear it, try to listen for it while watching a TV drama at night. I think most hour-long shows have it in the background.

You mean the "tinny" buzz sound? I've never noticed that sound before. I had to strain to hear it. Better get our tin foil hats out!

It sounds like low tone wind chimes. Like those ones with the long silver tubes? I heard it exactly where you said it was. I've never paid attention to hearing it before on other shows, but I will be now.

It sounds to me like the tones the old dial-up computers or fax machines made when connecting.

What's annoying is I never noticed this sound before but now that I'm aware of it I'm going to be listening for it when watching my shows. Dammit.
