When I was a little kid in the fifties I remember watching an animated story which was shown yearly, perhaps at Christmas time ? about a little boy who is made to jump into three cauldrons, or pools of water. One is boiling hot, one is freezing cold, and the third I don't remember.
It is a vague, distant memory that made a lasting impression on me.
And it always bubbles up to the surface of my mind at this time of year.

Does anyone have a similar recollection or know the name of this early cartoon?

The details are a little off, but I think you are thinking of Goldie Locks and The Three Bears, and the third one is just right!
Just kidding, sorry no doesn't ring any bells.

Googling the description brings up The Humpbacked Horse, which was a Russian cartoon that was dubbed into English and called The Magic Pony.

The boy jumps into a cauldron of boiling water, a cauldron of milk, and a cauldron of freezing water.

It originally aired in 1947.
