The grippe?

If not, it might be listed in One Hundred Old Man Words… such as chilblains...

Chilblains sounds like something you'd get from sleeping with the window open!

First of all it wouldn't have been "consumption," because that's an old term for tuberculosis, and the character was clearly a hypochondriac.

According to my recollection, Ellie relents about requiring a prescription after she finds out that Emma had been getting sugar pills all along. Emma the hypochondriac continues to get her "prescription" filled, and all's well in Mayberry.

And, true enough, placebos actually work for many! The show was ahead of its' time.

I was convinced it was the "vapors" until blinx stated "the grippe". I'm going to have to think about it for a while. So was Ellie, also the school teacher, who was Andy's GF?

No, that Helen Crump (?). Ellie was pharmacist. When you think about it that's pretty forward thinking for 1960! The actor who played Ellie was also the older daughter from Father Knows Best, Eleanor Donahue. And yes, she was his GF on the show.

I think she just complained about pains because she kept saying she had pains all over her body, here, there and everywhere but I don't remember her giving them a name as in a specific illness. If I remember correctly, Ellie Walker came to the pharmacy to help her uncle who owned it. I don't recall his name but I remember Emma said that he always gave her "special" pills. They were really placebos he prescribed just to shut her up. Ellie felt that was unethical so she refused to do it.

A little trivia about Elinor Donahue in real life. I met a once met a woman while at a health resort in San Antonio back in the 70's. She told me she owned a little health food store back in LA when they first became popular. She had many movie stars frequent her store. The only one I remember was Elinor Donahue who the woman said was the nicest person you would ever want to meet. Ms. Donohue always came in the store without makeup, dressed very casually and chatted with the help. She even remembered their names. She would sign autographs for other customers and answer questions if someone asked.

I adored the Andy Griffith show. I vaguely remember the episode but no more details. Minervah, I do definitely remember that Ellie came to help out her uncle (or anyway to help out somebody). back in the day I do remember both Helen Krump (Opie's teacher) and Ellie, but I don't think at the time I wondered about the story lines blending together. So, while I have no clue as to the name of the ailment, does anyone remember the storyline that let Ellie leave and Helen be Andy's girlfriend?
On a side note, I do remember always marveling at how cozy and warm Aunt Bea made that kitchen seem

Was that a b&w episode or color? I just couldn't get into the color ones and that was right when Barney left for Raleigh/Hollywood and the show was over for me.

When I was a freshman in High School we an Assembly called...a little break for everyone....
(Central NY, small farm town)
And guess who came thru to entertain us? The whistler of the AG Show theme.
Ha!
He did birds for us and other classics. Simple guy with an extra 40 pounds on him, glasses,
receding hairline...is all I remember.
