Suggestions please ?
I would say "The Big Bang Theory," but it might be a little bit too quick and witty for what you're looking for. Plus, it can be a bit 'racy' at times. However, it doesn't sound like you were around in the 1960s, therefore, I would recommend just about any 1960s sitcom. And here's a list:

Best 60s Sitcoms | List of the Top 1960s TV Comedies

However, no. 23, "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In" isn't really a sitcom and is a bit racy and controversial at times, but is as funny as all get-out. Also, I don't know why no. 34, "Star Trek: The Original Series" is on the list since it is a one hour action-adventure, science fiction drama. Plus, I really don't know that much about no. 38, "Monty Python's Flying Circus," but I know that Monty Python's stuff is very racy and very controversial.

And I don't know what no. 42, "Laugh In" is. Unless it's the same show as no. 23. No. 44, "Night Gallery" is a horror show, therefore, I don't know what it's doing on the list. But this is starting to get long, therefore, no. 46, no. 47, and no. 48 are hour long dramas. No. 49 is a variety show, but is pretty safe, however, I have no idea what no. 55 is. And no. 58 is more like a half-an-hour drama, but it's a pretty safe and delightful show. But I hope that helps. Although, of course there are sitcoms from other decades that aren't mentioned on this list.

And somehow I missed no. 31 and no. 32, which are also not sitcoms.

If you weren't around during the original run of Laugh-In, the political jokes would fly over your head and the gags fly by in milliseconds. The rest would just seem dumb and dated to someone who would not have the historical context.

Seinfeld and Frasier requires some focus to absorb it all and to allow it to grow on you.

I would suggest Seventh Heaven, a "pleasant" family drama where you could look away for a few minutes and upon your return, you can figure out what you missed. Usually, the problem of the day is resolved by the end of the show. It doesn't require deep thinking, but it's fairly entertaining.

If you are looking for sitcoms and enjoy the more modern versions of borsht belt humor such as Friends and Seinfeld, try The Phil Slivers Show or The Dick Van Dyke Show. Many of the gags hold up fairly well in today's times.

Monty Python seemed shocking when it first aired in the US in 1972, although it had been on the air in the UK since 1968. It would hardly seem shocking to audiences in 2017, especially after Spamalot. In the 70s, it gained a cult following in the US and generated a bunch of tag lines. You can appreciate it more if you have knowledge about British 70s politics. Fawlty Towers might make a better choice and seem slightly less dated.

Great suggestions - I watch some of those repeatedly too already but some new suggestions for shows I've never seen before that I will try a few episodes to see if I like them. Big Bang - not too quick for what I'm looking for & will definitely give those 60s shows another try - am familiar already with a bunch of them- thanks to all & gave rep for your troubles!!

Thank you! I forgot all about that show! it just disappeared- I even forgot what channel it was on- I'll have to go see where I left off with it.

I also recommend Gilmore Girls-I often have it on for "white noise" must have seen each episode 100's of times

you get me - i want to be able to miss a little if my focus goes elsewhere but still enjoy the overall show - some of them like golden girls, murder she wrote, frasier - I watched so many times I can do some of the dialogue but always feel entertained even if I miss a bunch of the show to other distractions - tried catching up on Fringe once - LOL - all I did was hit the rewind until finally I just made it a strictly tv night and paid attention. Thought that show was pretty tame and entertaining and fun but had to pay attention.

I second Frasier - I have some episodes where my son and I were laughing so hard we were crying. The best one was "Merry Christmas Mrs. Moskowitz" and the one where Frasier's first ex-wife was a children's TV celebrity played by Laurie Metcalf from Roseanne.

Actually, he never was exclusively asking for sitcoms.
