As a HC worker and NOW retired.. my TV goes 24/7.. constantly !! I use it like I use to putting on A/c "Window Shaker" to drown out noise in back yard when working night shift and kids and neighbours in back yard swimming or playing! White noise or TV same thing.. I'm now ( post retirement) due to some much shift work have sleeping issues so keep background voices/music/shows going at low volume so can tune it OUT!
Problem is NOW> like it always was.. I only sleep 2-4 hours at a time.. wake up, go to BR //turn over and go back to sleep! Lifetime of poor sleep pattern is a symptom/ causation of my career.. I accepted it then and have adapted!!
I stay up past 1:00 am most nights, sometimes until 2:00 am if I have dozed in my recliner earlier in the evening. Up until a couple months ago I used to watch Jimmy Kimmel (11:05 pm CT) then switch over to Seinfeld (11:30 pm and 12:00 am CT) while reading the forums on C-D. I have since gotten "burned out" on both shows and now just turn the TV off after the news at 11:05 pm.
I get in bed around 10:30-11:00 p.m., switch the TV on in there with a 90 minute timer and fall asleep to mindless drivel on the CW. I never used to have a TV in my bedroom until the last few months. Now it helps me fall asleep without my mind going into overdrive.
Only if I happen to already be watching a 10:00 show that had an interesting local news preview during a commercial. I get what the poster above said about having background noise, though. I use fans, an air filter, and music in similar fashion.
I don't watch traditional tv, but I do watch via Netflix, YouTube, apps, or other means after 11 quite a bit. But I don't get off work until 9:00 pm, and by the time I get home and eat dinner it's already around 10 most days.
Netflix, Hulu, Amazon.. our treat at the end of the day..
even if we get sleepy it lulls us to sleep (we put on the auto turn off timer)
