I was surprised and unhappy when "Hell on Wheels" killed Dominique McElligott's character Lily in the final episode of Season Two. She was the best thing going on that show.
Henry Blake on MASH. Such a positive feeling -- I'm going home. Then Radar comes in.
For the win. This one was... truly, deeply shocking, especially as MASH was still a full-out comedy at the time.

Bob Newhart's character Dick Louden at the very end of Newhart where he dies and wakes up as Dr Robert Hartley back in his previous TV series. Not shocking in a sad and sorry way, but very creative.
I don't recall that he died, or was said to... just that he woke up from a very long dream.

Another good one. I didn't see it coming. And the Swede didn't get half the kicking around he ultimately deserved.
Daniel Avery reminds me of how much I hated the Death of Maureen Bauer, on Guiding Light.
Heck, the same hack producer who killed off 'Maureen' on GL (Jill Farren Phelps) simply got transferred over to Another World to oversee the slaughter of 'Frankie Frame'. She tried for decades to deny it was her idea (she took the blame for Maureen, but tried to shift blame to the Head Writer for how Frankie's murder was staged/played out). It was a larger-scale instance of how an incompetent employee will just get moved around rather than just get fired when it is apparent they are incompetent. She kept getting shuttled around from one soap to another until there were no more soaps left for her to ruin.
Richard Poole on Death in Paradise. I couldn't believe that they not only killed the main character, but they then actually used his death as the murder mystery for that episode. That was just cold.
Nothing like disposable main characters.
