Yes. I got the impression that first episode spanned a few months in time. They didn't do a great job of emphasizing that, but the events didn't seem to take place over several days but over a few months.
Spoiler
well, he came home from having that fight with Ote—Marybeth got the phone call from the doctor about being pregnant, then they go to the street fair—it couldn’t have been more than a week between those events because the retired game warden told Joe about Ote spilling the beans about taking Joe’s gun away—
I didn’t finish that first episode — don’t know that I care to
Agreed. I'm a big fan of the series. Only one of the books has been a bit of a disappoint to me, and even it wasn't bad, all things considered. It just jumped the shark a tad in the last 20 pages.
Box can get a little too enthusiastic about including controversial issues. It can get a little preachy, especially his North Idaho novel Blue Heaven
I had a very hard time getting through the first book (THE HIGHWAY) for all the reasons you mentioned, and simply because the main character (Hoyt) was such an unapologetic a-hole. It was hard to root for him. But the subsequent books that concentrated more on Cassie, I enjoyed a lot more.
Right, but I don't like to be jerked around, having invested in a character you think will carry the story, only to find out that the author is doing a Hitchcock on you...
Me, too. It was so bad. Which hurt, because I really do like the books and very much enjoy Katheryn Winnick. But the writing was just so ridiculous. My wife and I watched the first episode, and we were constantly either rolling our eyes or wiping away tears of laughter at how bad it was. At one point, my wife actually said, "Oh, the two hotties are not going to get in a bar fight over their man, are they? This show can't possibly be that cliche!" And within 15 seconds, the two hotties were in a bar fight over their man.
One of the great appeals of C.J. Box's books is that his heroes are so relatable. Joe Pickett is not a super hero. Cassie Dewell is not a Mary Sue. But BIG SKY went full-bore Hollywood with their approach to the characters. I just could not get into it.
I still haven't watched the TV show. Don't have PARAMOUNT+ yet. But this is the one show that has me seriously tempted to subscribe, at least for a month.
I have been "fan casting" this show in my head for a decade, and to be honest, none of the actors are how I pictured these characters, but that's okay. I can get past that as long as the performances are good.
Me, too. But MaryBeth is a pretty good choice this early in their lives, and I think the bungling deputy will work out just fine! Missy just seems so young! But realistically, she'd only be in her 50s at that time, with the girls being little kids, so I guess she's an okay choice, too. She's definitely abrasive enough.
Thanks for letting us know, Mark! My favorite crime book series! Even more so than Longmire. My mental image of Joe is Billy Campbell in his 30s and 40s--not so much this guy.
So Spectrum TV is another pay channel? Or another network? We can't just keep adding new pay channels. We signed up for Amazon Prime because of Bosch, and the signal is so weak that it keeps reloading all through the show--unwatchable. I think we may have to give up on Joe Pickett.
Anyway, let us know if the first few episodes are worth watching.
Its all going full circle. All the streaming channels added up will cost the same as cable with 200-300 channels.
I think it is worth watching. There is some good, dry humor going on, the locations (BC) are stunning, and the story is developing. But the plot is a slow burner, and it's hard to keep up the interest for a whole week until the new episode airs, so if one hasn't read any of the books, I suggest waiting until all episodes are available, and then binge it. By the end of S1 I'll probably weigh in on whether I think it was worth my time!
Watched the final episode of the series this morning. All I can say it is that it kept its so-so standard until the very end where a great Woody Guthrie song helped it along. Altogether it bore only a vague resemblance to the two Box books it was based on. Apparently C.J. Box hasn't been too thrilled, either.
S2 has been confirmed by Spectrum, and I will probably watch it when it comes to Prime--but mainly for the Alberta location and the ambiance, not out of enthusiasm for the writing or the acting...
Finally finished it. Not spectacular, but good. I enjoyed it more than I had anticipated after the dreck of BIG SKY, but all in all, I still far prefer the books.
