Paul Watson does look like a dope, but if you watch, the decisions he makes and his navigation skills are actually really good in my opinion. I like his attitude, but it does take a while to get over his dopey looks and see that he is actually a bada$$.

He is not a bada$$. He and his crew are completely inept and they almost die in every episode. That's not good decision making that you are watching.

Like taking a ship not built for ice straight through waters full of ice and icebergs and such? That almost sank them, even punched holes in their hull. Ramming ships much larger than his? Engaging in acts of terror?

I don't know...this article may help change your opinion.
It is an interview with Watson who claims he pioneered "tree spiking". A technique to maim loggers.

Not so much. I think he's a clown, who puts his people in great danger. Saw an episode where they were dropping the small boats in the water while being chased...and they mention the guy who will steer the dinghy was an Art major from NYU who had never done this before...let alone in the Antarctic ocean.
I think his crew consist of bright eyed trust fund kids 'trying to make a difference'. But they don't know any better, and he's going to get one of them killed.
very much like the CDF attacks on AZ attempting to defend its borders, the CDF attacks on the whale defenders is sad. japan is in blatant violation of treaty, extensive commerical hunting of whales under the cloak of scientific sample taking.

I'm sure that you have the tongue firmly in the cheek, but that does actually have an effect on my opinion of the man...
I've had some run-ins with the Sierra Club while permitting directional wells under National Parks Service surface acreage. They are not mainstream; they are crazy people.
Don't get me wrong Huck, I think the thinly veiled cloak of research is a sham, but there are likely better (and safer) ways to spend the millions donated to save the whales.
Seems Mr. Watson is against people...I wonder how he will feel about them once he encounters some health problems...

i am open to discussion. but the whale guys and the minutemen have something in common-- they step up when our goverment absolutely refuses to enforce laws/treaties. i dont see anybody else doing this, just mostly typing on CDF.

No it's perfectly legal. The IWC participates in the issuing of the permits. You may not like it, but it's legal. That "loophole" in the moratorium (temporary halt, not permanent ban) on commercial whaling was placed there quite intentionally.
