She was supposed to be going to community college (when Leonard tried to write her paper for her). Then she said again she wants to take a science class and sign up so she wouldn't have to look up everything he said after they talked.
So she never went through with it?

Agreed--hope they don't conveniently drop this subplot. I'd like to see her continue talking about school from time to time, and also be given some additional interests to talk about or even do with the guys. There has to be more to her life than a part time waitress job--surely they can give her a few activities and interests that fill her day while everyone else is at their day jobs.

And I'd like it to be something a little unexpected, maybe an interest that's just a little nerdy to show us another side of Penny. Something to explain why she enjoys spending so much time hanging out with this group of people (Leonard is understandable, but Amy?). Maybe an interest that she shares with Amy, although Penny never mentions it to Amy because she wants to keep it a secret. That could be an interesting subplot.

Well, our group of supernerds in high school had some not-as-smart hanger-on type people.
I think they just enjoyed the kinds of conversations and then there were still other common interests like a pick-up bball game or going to the movies, etc.

Bingo! Penny needs to be given some interests that she enjoys sharing with the others, something in addition to eating pizza on their couch. So far every time she's done something with them she's either left early or come home griping about how much she hated it (road trip, roller skating, etc.) That was funny initially, but gets old....it's time to give her something she enjoys doing that ties in with the others. Either something she does with them or something she does on her own that somehow fits with them.

^^^ For example, there have been a few episodes where Penny started an entrepreneurial idea. Unfortunately, these ventures are never discussed again after the episode concludes (Penny blossoms, creating a shoe app). How much better it would be if they kept either of those ideas going as a running subplot, or at least discuss what happened to the idea.

Or... how about having a running sub plot where Penny turns out to be fascinated by Sheldon's shirt folding device--and over time she has designed her own and spends her days trying to sell it and market it. That would be an interesting secret activity, and it would make sense that she might not want Sheldon to know about it. Could also lead to some interesting discussions ebtween her and Sheldon, where she's trying to find out information without cluing him in.

That's a real thing someone has already invented, marketed, and sold.
They use it in retail establishments everywhere.

^^ Sure, but she could invent her own variation on it. And then look for a company to buy the idea or maybe to manufacture it. Part of the deal would be Penny would star in (and maybe even produce) all ads and commercials to sell it. Then we could have the fun of seeing the ads. Remember the hemorrhoid commercial? I'd love to see more of Penny being in cheesy ads like that.

I guess Penny will never be successful, because the day she find success, from there will not make more sense to be linked to a group of nerds.

I guess it depends on what you mean by success. If she became a famous actress overnight, I'd agree that she could be so overwhelmed by the experience that she'd quickly move on.

On the other hand if her success is that she starts a entrepreneurial business and actually keeps it going for more than one episode, then the guys would be very handy for her. They helped her quite a bit with her business start-ups in the past, plus they represent a network of people at the university who might need her products. Plus she's dated Leonard for several years now and those two appear to be headed towards marriage.

Or, if her success is that she finds an increasing number of acting gigs in low paying cheesy commercials, I doubt she'd leave her friends. Joey didn't leave his friends on Friends, yet he was allowed to get acting gigs.

Let's face it, the problem is the writers don't know what to do with the supporting characters (especially the female ones). The writers would do well to look at a show like "A Different World" and see how supporting cast can be given depth and personality. And yes, I definitely agree with the person who said they need to fix Amy. Amy started off great, but now has become a one-note gal who apparently has no interest doing anything else in life besides lusting after Sheldon and inappropriately adoring Penny. Blech. That character has so much potential, they need to go back to using it.

Why?
People of substance, worth, and value remain assets no matter what.

You act like she hangs out with them because she currently has no choice/better offers.
That's not true - she even commented in one episode about how she couldn't be with a guy because he didn't intellectually challenge her.
She also mentioned to Leonard at some point that dating someone smart and successful changed how she viewed her dating pool.

The spin is that these guys are lucky to be hanging out with some hot chick, but the REALITY is that she is lucky to be exposed to what they bring to her life.
People like her are a dime a dozen. How often do you get to hang with the true upper echelon of academia?
