I think it was the 'Bachelor' themed reality shows that made every network brain trust think that the new big thing was milkable on any cockamamie idea possible. Is that about right? Did reality TV explode with programming about then? Someone have a time-line on the evolution of the post-Real People/That's Incredible-in-the-future-everyone-will-be-famous-for-15 minutes prophecy coming true?
Dunno. I will admit that I like the cooking show - Top Chef.
But all those Survivor/Big Brother nonsense programs completely baffle me.
Just a bunch of squealing and backbiting and boring nonsense.
I only like Survivor and Amazing Race. I used to like Big Brother back in the first season, and maybe the second. They need to go back to the original format and make them all suffer more. Too many luxuries for a bunch of brainless boneheads.
I may be wrong, but I think MTV's the Real World is what started to great leap in reality TV. It has spawned enough shows to the point where ANYONE can get their own show. I don't watch any of it anymore. Most of it looks fake and scripted. I'd just as soon rent a movie.
I always thought a good reality show would be called "domestic divas" and ordinary moms would do ordinary everyday things and compete for some big prize. That would make a good show. Alas, I do get tired of the reality crud that dominates. I like good old fashioned 30 minute sit-coms. But those are getting fewer and fewer. Oh, and the thing I hate more than reality tv is the multiple versions of CSI.
Most of the reality shows out there are junk to me. If they have a point or a goal to them that makes it a little better IMO. Shows like "Survivor" that have the goal of winning money or other shows like "The Next Top Chef" (I think that's what it's called??) where the winner gets a new show on Food Network are examples. At least those have some kind of point to them. The ones I literally can't stand are the ones that just follow people around all day while they go shopping or just sit around the house and argue. I don't care if they are real people or celebrities I refuse to watch any of those.
What really escalated the trend was the writers' strike a few years ago. Studios realized they could crank out this drek, cheaply without writers and it was all downhill from there. Some are more worthy than others. I liked Survivorman and enjoy Gordan Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares and am addicted to the newly refreshed Ice Road Truckers
I believe the people in Reality TV make substantially less than SAG members. As well as the less writing you need to do, saves studios cash. They dont care about quality, its all about selling advertising.
