Tyler is what it is, a regional market center and center for health services in one of the most right wing areas of the country. It has a population that town boosters usually claim is far larger than it actually is (around 90,000).

Its a cheap place to to buy property and if, as I did, you want some room to spread out you can buy relatively inexpensive land outside the city. Property taxes in both the city and the county are low, the roads are pretty good, most goods and services are available in town and there is a regional airport that will take you to Dallas or Houston where you can connect to international flights and head, as I also do every year, to Paris France to get my civilization fix.

The vast majority of people here are somewhat to the right of Benito Mussolini and local politics vomits up neo-fascists and racists who can be heard publicly screaming at non-whites to "go back where they came from."

But the fact is that even in this sea of right-wingers and religious maniacs there are perfectly sensible, educated people if you look for them. Eventually you gather a coterie of such people as friends and pay no attention to the cross burners and creationists.

There is little by way of nightlife but there is enough and even in the biggest cities I tend to find a couple of places I like and spend my time there. So a half dozen decent music venues is quite enough for me (then again I am an old geezer). Ditto with the restaurant scene which is generally pretty bleak but there are a few restaurants that would do well any place (including Paris). I don't feel the need to eat in different restaurant every night of the week (or even once a week) so the handful of places serving edible food is quite enough.

Once you accept the Tyler area and Smith county for what they are its quite a decent place to live. If you want a major metropolitan area, neighbors who don't move their lips when they read (and have all their teeth), or a sophisticated, secular society, then this area isn't for you.

You lost all credibility with me right here. The City of Tyler is just over 100,000 & the metro (Smith County) is 200,000. If you include surrounding towns & counties the numbers jump up to 250,000.

Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but Tyler had 90,000 people 10 years ago.

I can see why you feel most Tylerites aren't "sophisticated" & diverse enough. You bought a house outside of The Loop & the 2nd loop at that. The Azalea District or Eastern Tyler near the Medical Center District would have been a much better choice.

Its the US Census Bureau that figures the population of Tyler at around 90,000 today. That number was announced only a couple of weeks ago.

The only claim that it is over 100,000 is from a paid "consultant" hired by the city to tell it that they had a population of over 100,000 so that they could extend their ETJ. Guess what? The paid consultant told them what they wanted to hear.

Between the government agency charged with the responsibility under legislation dictated by the Constitution and some paid flack I think the Census Bureau has the credibility.

I doubt that moving a few miles into the city of Tyler would improve my view of its sophistication. Its a town populated primarily by rubes and yokels and one need only look at its civic leaders or scan the pages of Tyler Today or Bscene to confirm that. Better still look at the ludicrous dresses worn by the "Rose Queen" and her "court" and read the gushing, breathless articles in the Tyler Paper. I clip all the material about the Rose Festival, photo copy it and send it to my friends around the world to give them a laugh.

I've been in a lot of cities (large & small) & can tell you without a doubt in my mind that Tyler is well over 100,000 people city limits alone. The horrendous traffic on the Loop & Broadway is a tell tale sign. We even have a tolled partial outer loop now just like Houston & Dallas.

Yes, we may still have some corny things & what not around here, but that doesn't stop Tyler from growing & diversifying as a city/metro.

I was born & raised here. I've seen a lot of positive changes in 30+ years.

Someone requested for sub-forum but Moderators refused to do it about year ago. I'd like for them to do it.

The Census figures released "a couple of weeks ago" were for July 1, 2009, every July 1st, figures are released. For July 1, 2009 the figures were just under 99,000 for the county just over 200,000. Now, Tyler was sure they had an undercount in 2000, so they hired a private firm to provide figures on January 1, 2005, which showed just over 100,000. I would bet that was close to correct, however, I took part in the 2000 Census and many homes were counted as Zero, not one living there, even when 4 cars were in the dirveway, the Hispanics will not be counted, if they were we would have, well, who knows, 110,000 -120,000 but it be the Census foe 2010 will show 100,000 or maybe just under. lmo
