I'm in CA, and when I lost my job, I qualified for $240 per month in Food Stamps. That was until my unemployment kicked in, and they cut me off. At $1000 in CA, you're ineligible for Food Stamps, because your income is too high. Plus, they overpaid me, I had to pay them back, and now I've come to find out that they issued me Food Stamps, and took them because I hadn't used my EBT card in a year. So now I have to go through an appeal to get my $71 back from them.

I was told that most people who are collecting unemployment will try to get some off the books income to supplement their earnings. She put up signs all over the place advertising she would clean people's homes and got some phone calls and now that she has done a good job some referrals. Cash only no one would know.
She's still "scamming the system" both UE AND the Food Stamps program by earning undeclared income but availing herself of same based on her declared income.

But whatever. She best hope no-one that knows this decides to spill the beans or she'll be in a world of hurt

Default Dirty Pretty Things

"Scammin' the system"; have you ever lived that close to the edge? Have you ever had to sleep in your car? Have you ever been truly hungry? Have you ever had to endure the insult and injury, the jokes, about people missing teeth?

YES - next question? What has THAT to do with this woman scamming the system by working under the table and not declaring income that would preclude her from the UE and food stamps she's enjoying now?

She's NOT hungry, OR sleeping in her car etc etc etc, she's just CHEATING

Cleaning people houses is unstable income... I guess sometimes you wouldn't get work so I wouldn't declare this income too. So I wouldn't call her a scammer. And $1000 a month isn't much too.

Guess you don't understand breaking the law then? Hope she makes enough to pay back any overpayment if they find out.

LOL. Yeh, I'm sure it's all true because it's “somebody he knows" and “he was told”.

I worked on a farm part time this summer. I was on the books and got a regular paycheck, and I did declare it as income when I filed my unemployment, but it was not enough to make a difference.
In this state, you can earn up to a certain amount on top of your unemployment. Besides, it was just a short-term temporary job for a couple of months.

No but I've lived overseas...does that count as "edge"?
I've slept in my car and lost my virginity there also
I'm always hungry...I love food
No, I've always practiced good oral hygiene
