Soon to be unemployed after 27 years with the same company. They have eliminated my position. This will be my first go-around with unemployment benefits. I live in NJ what can I expect about length of benefits and career training. Any other insight or advice would be helpful.

Thanks, Kyle.

26 weeks state benefits - you have one year to exhaust those. Sequester will not affect these benefits. NJ benefit calculator, here:

http://lwd.state.nj.us/uiapp/Start.html

When those are exhausted, you should be eligible for federal benefits as follows.

14 weeks EUC Tier 1
14 weeks EUC Tier 2
09 weeks EUC Tier 3
10 weeks EUC Tier 4

Sequester may reduce your weekly federal benefit 10.7% if not resolved by the time you have exhausted state benefits. Under present legislation, all federal benefit payments end December 28, 2013. More info from NJ on benefits here:

I've provided the correct link to NJ federal extensions (see above) - inadvertently plugged in NY.

Good luck.

So sorry this happened to you. Take some time, "mourn" for your old life, and when you're ready, get back in there and start searching for your new life.

As for career training, your unemployment office should have a lot of advice on this (they do in PA). If you are looking for a career change, they can offer you testing to explore what you'd like and what you'd be good at. There are also grants available for training and educational programs. Red tape and bureaucracy to slog through, but it's worth it.

If you were offered outplacement service, take advantage of that. It's often good just to get out of the house and get support from others who are in the same boat.

Also, read posts on this thread. The OP was laid off after 15 years, and has been doing a lot to keep busy while job hunting.
