No problem with the notion that humans and civilization have been around a lot longer than currently estimated. But it's hard to buy the idea that previous hi-technology cultures existed, simply because there's been no hi-tech evidence to back it up. For example stainless steel really ain't that hard to make (it's basically steel with some chromium), and there's a reason it's so common and popular in manufacturing, because it doesn't corrode and is for all intents and purposes, damn near indestructible! And if any technologically advanced culture ever did exist on earth before, there should still be tons of the stuff all over the place!

So if we can find 65 million year old dinosaur bones, we should surely be able to dig up the occasional stainless steel widget from ancient Mu, Atlantis or wherever!

thing is how do you really know that these things havent already been dug up? there not just gonna post it on the news the military will be the first to arrive on the scene and swear everyone that saw it to secrecy and take it away to some secure location and make up some other story about there find they arent gonna put alien technology found on the news it will ensure mass chaos and the questioning of faith and religion which is a big money maker also.

And yet we've lost the original formula and technique for making Damascene steel.

It is very easy really.

Fukushima spent fuel pool #4 will collapse the rods will be exposed to the air and explode, the 3 nuclear cores which are in the ground contaminating the ground water will explode or else the whole horrible disaster will fall into the sea. The air will become polluted, the sea will become polluted and we will all die of radiation poisoning. See the film On the Beach.

The Bayou Corne Napoloen Salt Dome will collapse allowing the stored contents of the 52 caverns to be exposed to the air causing butane to explode and a huge release of oil and methane from the methane hydroxide reserves under the Gulf of Mexico to be released into the air.

The St Loius landfill fire which is moving towards West Lake Nuclear Waste Site and cannot be stopped will reach the radioactive contents of West Lake and will spread airbourne radiation across the area killing thousands of people downwind.

These are 3 disasters which we do not have the technology to stop and which are progressing faster than we can develop the technology to stop them.

With the strange weather happening at the moment, a super cell storm will hit the USA causing flooding and meltdown of numerous multiple nuclear power plants across the flooded area. Results similar to above.

Nuclear winter is a planned obsolescence of the human being. The Earth will renew herself by volcanic activity reabsorbing everything into the lava and resetting the whole ecosystem. What is a few million years to a planet?

When was the last time you went scuba diving to the bottom of the Pacific or Atlantic ocean?

If the oil suddenly stopped flowing today, there would be virtually nothing left of our civilization in another century.
Though I do not buy into the whole ancient civ, alien, high tech thing; I agree with the above.

For a micro look at this, a person just has to go to some of the former USSR countries; there a person can see civilizaiton going in reverse. What use to be a place with a high level of education, science, and industry, has turned into a third world country where even making a road or providing hot water is a challenge. A person just stands there in the middle of decaying infrastructure and asks "this was really part of a country that put the first man into space?"

So yes, on the micro level loss of knowledge happens even now, and I am sure on a macro level it has happened in the past for various reasons. But tech really builds on top of other tech, so things most likely had to come in some order. I look at it more like ideas could have possibly been loss rather than actual tech. For my example above, it was not like the tech was loss, it was jsut that anyone who knew how to do anything left the countries, brain drain as they call it.

They seemed impressive to the earthlings, but definitely did not have all the techs of their home planet. Much of sci-fi and superhero comics are just ancient astronaut/alien theory packaged into an entertaining, fictionalized format. It dates back well before Sitchen and von Daniken. Also there was supposedly a flood that wiped out the Nephilim/Annunaki antediluvian civilization and they left this rock or went underground. The rest started "priesthood" orders to preserve the secrets of civilization, but these quickly devolved into Masonry and other secret societies that do more to keep people from knowledge than preserve it.

2. What caused the dark ages after the zenith of the Roman and Greek civilizations? Greedy politicians, an uneducated lower class that outgrew the ones with the secrets, and the purposeful destruction of "pagan" schools and libraries. Superstition abounds, as does totalitarian statecraft. Just apply the same model to Atlantis or whatever high civilization. Human hubris is destructive.
BINGO - THIS IS THE BEST ANALOGY OF ALL!! Look at the great works of the ancient Greeks and Romans - and then POP - middle ages happen and all that great knowledge is down the toilet. YES, it is possible to 'regress' a civilization!!

Just like some American cities have regressed from prosperous regions 70 years ago to economic dumps today.

The fallacy of the arguments is based in judging ancients by modern standards. First, most civilizations that were advanced involved themselves with multiple wars with rivals. Alexandria is a great example. When the Egyptian civilization fell, the library at Alexandria was burned. This resulted in a huge loss of information. Second, language, social, and geographical barriers made the transmission of technology very difficult. We must remember, our world is small thanks to the internet. It was very different to ancient civilizations. Finally, there was never a large leisure class in any ancient civilization. To learn to read and write required time and effort that most ancients spent cultivating food and conducting trade. Literacy belonged to the upper classes and the religous. Add the fact that paper was not readily available and all writing must be copied to be mass produced and it becomes easy to see why the transmission of knowledge was so difficult. If the master was the only one who could read and never wrote down the process (let alone every actually perform it himself), it would be impossible for future generations to learn except by word of mouth. Anyone who has played the rumour line game knows that this process is doomed for failure.

While some of the ideas suggested make for interesting reading, it is not as complex as many think. I do give some credence to those who suggested scarcity. Food, water and other essential supplies that disappeared or became inadequate could certainly destroy civilization. I am sure that has happened too.

There are theories by reputable scientists that are considering intelligent societies - even more than our own -that have been destroyed completely by incredibly catastrophic events and leaving no trace at all. There are many theories as to what could cause a complete environmental collapse and resurfacing of the Earth. This is a very controversial idea within modern science, but after looking at other planets and our own, it may be that the Earth goes through tremendously violent cycles.

Also, think about how fast we are advancing technologically. In the last 50 -60 years, we have seen more technological change than in the last 100,000 years. Apex in technology may have lead to self destruction, or civilizations may have even left earth before natural disasters - such as polar shifts, meteorite strikes, etc.

These seem plausible to me, but nothing has ever been proven and I am no scientist. We do know that people were creating incredible dwellings and art as far back as 11,000 or 12,000 years - proving that when we look back on our past, we should not think of our ancestors as primitive at all. These recent findings are only acknowledged as legitimate in the last 10 - 12 years. Before that, ideas like those listed above were ridiculed.
