Aloha,
I believe it is called 'smudging'? Not quite sure. My question is this...is it only used to rid
evil or can it be used to help loving spirits cross over?

When I was a teenager we were told that you can get a good buzz off of smoking it...or was that nutmeg?

I was looking for a serious, more adult-like reply, but, thanks for lending your two cents worth.

From what I understand, there are different types of smudging, but smudging is for energy work, not clearing spirits... keep in mind I have no expertise on this.

If you have a spirit you want to move on, you might try to find a medium who can help her find her way.

Smudging is not always sage or just sage. Different plants have different properties.
Smudging would not send a loved ones spirit on. As I understand it, smudging is for energies and non-human spirit. Smudging would be used to 'clear the air' prior to any work getting a spirit to move on. However, certain herbs are used to get the attention of the ancestors.

White sage is recommended rather than regular sage which is generally used for cooking

Sweet grass is used for smudging in Montana, this is to use the smoke to purify and help open yourself to the spirits, it is for prayer, meditation, the scent invokes memories, and a very important part of the ceremony when in a talking circle.

Tobacco is controversial, it is sacred when used for ceremonial reasons, but disgraceful when used recreationally, try to get youth to identify with that, as tobacco is a part of American Indian culture, but only when used for purification.

Ahh, and I see the topic going full circle, related to what the OP unjustly attacked me for:
There is "Diviner's Sage", which is a pshycoactive plant grown in the desert southwest US and Mexico and still used by the indians from that region for visonary shaman-type quests. I am not sure how it is related to the herb available in the supermarkets.
It is ingested by smoking or eating - you want to see spirits? Load it up into your bong and light up.

There are many different types of sage; Salvia.
The hallucinogen, Salvia divinorum is what you speak of. I would not recommend its use without a guide.

White or silver sage, and broadleaf sage is used for smudging as well as a medicine.
I started feeling like I might be sick, head and neck had 'that feeling' but I felt totally fine otherwise.
A native friend gave me some sage and told me how to make a tea with it and drink it. I believe it was white sage and I never came down with anything.
Since then when I start to get that feeling, I'll make a tea. If I don't have white sage on hand, I'll use culinary sage. Only once did I end up with a cold even after drinking the tea, but I think I was beyond the point of nipping it.
