I've wondered about that myself.
I've always been Christian -- of one persuasion or another -- but the only other-wordly entity that I actually got to see directly was when I was probably around 10 years old or thereabouts*. I was raised Roman Catholic, but I don't think I had any opinion on spirits one way or the other during my childhood.
When I went all born-again Christian in my early 20s, I still never saw anything directly again, though at that point I assumed it was probably because I now had the Holy Spirit in me and that was preventing things from "harassing" me ... or something like that, there.
But I found that a bit disappointing (if true -- though I'm now skeptical that this would necessarily be the case), because I've been open to such experiences and find them incredibly fascinating. Especially once I got past my "all ghosts are demons" phase.
*The aforementioned experience involved a dark mass hovering over my bed, near the ceiling,in the middle of the night (of course
). I even turned my head to look away from it as a test to see if it was actually something in the room, or just my mind's eye projecting it (in which case the image would be projected onto wherever I happened to be looking). It remained in that fixed spot. I finally realized I needed to use the bathroom, so up I went to do so. When I returned to bed and looked up toward the ceiling, it was gone. I don't even think I was afraid, which is strange because if that same thing were to happen now, I'd probably hide under the covers (I may like this sort of thing, but in the middle of the night I don't feel so brave, lol!).
