Big fan of the show, but I'm of the opinion that Art was in on a few of his callers' experiences, particularly the terrified ex-Area 51 employee who was allegedly hunted down and silenced while on-air (Art's station 'mysteriously lost its signal'. Cough.).
Entertaining nonetheless. I REALLY wish authorities would look closer into his wife Ramona's death, but hey, that's a whole other topic, eh?
It was a hoax. Listen to the gun repeatedly shooting at him from the ground near the end. There's no Doppler Effect, and there would be if he were flying over it. Case closed.
There was another caller who claimed he was an ex-employee who was on the run and called in crying about "extra-dimensional" beings. it turned out to be a hoax.

The Area 51 caller always intrigued me. One explanation could be he believed what he was saying even though he was incorrect. His call back to confess could be him thinking he over-stated things.

This would be unfortunate.
Why would it be unfortunate? I don't think anyone should take something like Coast to Coast seriously. It's an entertainment show, and it used to be a damn good one. Think of War of the World's in the '30s. Even though it's a call-in show, it's an entertainment show and staging things for dramatic effect would fit perfectly in the tradition of things like War of the Worlds.
I remember growing up catching it way past my bedtime sometimes, and it usually creeped me out. Last few times I heard it it was all about the Fed and politics. I get enough of that during the day with talk radio. I want creepy stories that make me feel like the world is still a mysterious place.
