I've said it before and I'll say it again: until I (or anybody else here with absolutely nothing to gain from lying) can jump in my own spaceship and take a joyride far enough out to see what our world actually looks like with my own two eyes, I have no choice but to reserve judgement on this one. Much like 9/11 and moon landing hoax conspiracies (which seem like small potatoes compared to this one), you start digging into this one and yeah, there are some smoking guns and things that simply don't pass the smell test that you wish you could scientifically explain away to ease your mind.
Of all the BS the scientific community has been spewing in the past, the world being round is one of those I believe it. For those who don't; fly at 45K feet and see the curvature of the earth! (Of course you will need a way to get into a military aircraft to do so in this day-and-age.)

I thought the flat earthers were just kidding, but when I realized at least some of them appear to really believe stuff like this (for fundamentalist religious reasons), it occurred to me: when they go into the polling booth, their votes count just the same as mine.
This is a religious attack thinly disguised as part of the discussion. I do not think there is a correlation with religion and belief in flat earth.
If the earth is flat how does one explain the shape of the shadow that the earth makes on the moon? This is most apparent during an eclipse.

You don't need a spaceship. Just get on a boat and go a few miles from shore. Or take a plane ride. Or go to some place on Earth with miles of horizon (eastern New Mexico works great), then stand on the hood of your car and look around. The curve of the Earth is evident and obvious.

Correct. A few fringe elements aside, very few religious people still believe in a flat earth. Most of the modern flat earth crowd are the same conspiracy-minded people who believe that Queen Elizabeth and Boxcar Willie are actually lizards.

Interesting. Mircea Eliade wrote in Myth and Reality of the aboriginal Dreamtime:
"The animals and plants created in illo tempore by the Supernatural Beings are ritually re-created. In Kimberley the rock paintings, which are believed to have been painted by the Ancestors, are repainted in order to reactivate their creative force, as it was first manifested in the mythical times, at the beginning of the World."
Illo tempore refers to that time in a distant past when things were different, there were giant trees and men routinely lived to 900 years. The fantasies regarding the supposed lost primal forests seem very similar: there was a time when there were these giant forest, but we now live in a time when all we have is a degraded and miniaturized version of the originals.
Absent angels and demons in a secularized world that no longer believes in gods, we invent alien abductions and Men In Black. Absent a creation myth that reveals the true meaning about who and what we are as residents of the cosmos, we invent a flat earth that once grew giant trees but reality has "fallen" and we only experience a faint reflection of it today. "There were giants in the earth in those days." (Gen 6:4)
P.S.: I take the Genesis account as myth in its truest and oldest form: a story which tells us something true and eternal about our natures, but which is not to be taken literally. It is true but it's not historical. The same could be said about other myths as well -- Freud and his followers, atheists all, took the Greek myths in particular as saying something essential about who we are as human beings.

Agreed. Genesis is true theologically, but Genesis is not a history book or a science book any more than Origin of Species is a cookbook.
A question I would ask these folks: Are there any planets that we have discovered that aren't round or spherical? The answer, obviously, is no. So why would planet Earth be shaped any different from all the other known planets in the universe???
