Misidentifying IR signatures is not a minor problem.
If this is a rare and unidentified atmospheric phenomenon, how would you ever correct for it? You'd need the scientists to identify a cause first, and then you can correct for the misidentification. Depending on the frequency, that could take decades.

I believe the IR signatures referred to in the article were for distant aircraft rather than rare atmospheric phenomenon.

Do you remember the case of a crew in a plane that saw IR images, I think in Mexico, some years ago? I believe the final consensus of what they were picking up were oil fields that were flaring off natural gas many miles away, but they appeared to be in the air because of a temperature inversion (an atmospheric phenomenon). The incident is pretty much on the edge of my memory so I may not have the details entirely correct. It's been on a UFO program though.
BTW ... the second episode of "Unidentified" (the program that inspired the original post) is on the History Channel tonight, I think at 10 Eastern.

Yeah, that does sound familiar. Here's the wikipedia page on Fata Morgana:
One of the UFOs I've seen in the past was over the Mississippi River in the late 1960s - It was during a UFO "flap" and as I recall was reported in the local papers. It appeared to be a silvery blimp shape but it morphed in various ways. My impression at the time was that it seemed to be some sort of mirage (distorted distant water tower?) rather than a craft.

And before the Dec 2017 NY Times articles, the govts official response on questions about UFOs/aliens, was that the last official investigation was Project Blue Book.
If they were not honest about acknowledging interest or current projects, what makes you believe they would be honest about any other aspect? LOL
Anyone think maybe the Government created something, or got tech from an exotic source and that's the cover-up? This could be even more bizarre then we think. Tech from another dimension, or from a lost race here on Earth.
Hinting it's Aliens after so many weird sightings seems too convenient. Why "soft disclosure" now in 2019?

But the US government is not the only government on the planet. Why are no other governments revealing the aliens? And for all the shows, organizations and individuals looking where is the proof? I think the SETI alone has spent tens of millions of dollars. You never answer the simple question.

Watch this video and tell me if our government is covering up or Russian government was more serious about aliens.
