I have been learning more about Rupert Sheldrake's theories on primacy of consciousness and dualism. His ideas account for such things as you described, and Sheldrake is certainly no hack. His ideas are amongst the few that have garnered my serious attention in many years. All thinkers stand on the shoulders of giants, but his ideas are very original and utterly fascinating.
