Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, Imperial College London, London School of Economics, Edinburgh, York.
But as previously said it depends what you want to do. Dundee for example is one of the best for forensic science, Edinburgh is the best for nursing, Reading for Town & Country Planning and Landscape etc.
As an Alumni of Imperial I would strongly recommend it although it has moved away from it's Engineering basis in recent years. Manchester is also good for Electronics (LEDs developed there) also as an outsider I would suggest Newcastle.
BTW UMIST doesn't exist anymore it got absorbed with two other Manc unis into one campus

What about UCL and the University of Manchester? I've read somewhere about them.
Manchester is very good. Probably No4. in the UK for engineering. However, I went there so I am biased (studied economics and not engineering).
