As I'm sure britons know americans are quite keen on their military. Service members often get thanked for their service in public. I was wondering if it's the same in Britain? How do people react when they find out that you served in the British Military or that you served in a war zone?

Being near to Salisbury Plain we see many military personnel round here.

We have lots of military activity here- I can sometimes hear the guns being fired on the Plain, and there is loads of helicopter activity about. Army vehicles including tanks are always to be seen.

It's just part of everyday life.

I'm military (though not British) and my current posting is in London.

You don't see many military uniforms at all in London but when you do the general reaction of the public seems along the lines of a nod and a " 'right" or paying no attention at all. Like Jezer said in his above post some parts of the country have a larger military presence than others (Salisbury Plain, Catterick, Portsmouth, Plymouth, East Anglia for example) but outside those areas generally the only time they're seen is in and around recruitment centres.

On the whole i'd say they're thought of as doing a job that raises a mild interest in some and no interest in others. Pretty much the same as in most European countries.

Most people hold the military in very high regard, as was demonstrated by the moving scenes at Wootton Bassett now Royal Wootton Bassett when soldiers who had been killed in action and were being repatriated, passed through the village on a regular basis.

Wootton Bassett: town gathers for a solemn ritual that is all too familiar

British military arent allowed to wear their uniforms in public like their American counterparts so you rarely see anyone in military garb in public unless its a formal occasion.
The UK has dealt with domestic terrorism for decades and wearing a uniform would make one an easy target so they are discouraged from wearing uniforms outside of bases.

This does not make Brits any less proud of their military.

As a country, I think we are proud of our military. Every parade I attended in Windsor had a huge turnout. Its different in the US though - there is a much more overt, almost worship for the military and its personnel. We have "boots to business" programs, military discounts everywhere, celebration days at work, and of course veterans day. All of that is very admirale, just a lot more overt that in the UK.

If you are going to post something at least make sure it is the truth.
