I also agree that our food is not deserving of most of the negative criticism levelled at it.
Standards have improved over the last few decades and we have moved on from the era of over boiled veg of our grandmothers!
I love our traditional grub and do a mean shepherds pie, fish pie, casseroles and so on. Thanks Delia!
However I would also suggest that if you look around the average town or city here we are still dominated by outlets that sell- let's be diplomatic here- crap. The fast food outlets that are to be found around the world are the ones that many flock to. I'm definitely not lovin' it.
I started school in the 1950's and believe me school meals were dreadful. But if you liked mince in one form or another five days a week you might well have enjoyed them. For 'Afters' it was always something incredibly stodgy like Plum Duff or Bread & Butter Pudding (minus the Butter of course) all with the obligatory runny custard.
The History teacher, who was ex RAF, used to say that the school cook received her training at the Colditz cordon bleu cookery school.
I should in fairness point out that the UK was still suffering the effects of rationing at the time.
Growing up as a child of British parents, mince and potatoes; roast beef and Yorkshire pudding; eggs, Heinz baked beans and chips; and ham & lentil soup were staples.
And there's just nothing like a good Scots meat pie. As my dad used to say, they are the reason the English and French were at war for centuries: as much as the French begged, the Scots refused to relinquish the recipe! =D
