How do Brits view America? In the same vein as other former colonies like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand? Or do you accept the fact that we broke away from the British empire and won our independence?

Winning independence doesn't change the fact the US was a colony.

True, but we gained our independence long before Canada or Australia. Just asking out of curiosity, though. The US and UK are arguably the "best friends of the world." We're strongly connected, no doubt.

We don't really view Australia and Canada as former colonies any more.

I don't think so. There were 13 original colonies all on the east coast and nothing remotely resembling what emerged as the repblic of the United States. That's not to say that Britain hasn't influenced much of the US though.

I just think that Australia is more culturally connected to the UK than the US, which is vastly different.

Yet turn on a lot of UK and US TV shows and there's often a lot of cross-Atlantic cultural traffic.
