Disasters sadly tend to be forgotten in the mists of time, especially during a period in history when accidents were common place, safety was not as good, life expectancy was lower and millions were dying in wars or living in extreme poverty.
Whose ever heard of the Victoria Hall Stampede in Sunderland for instance, when 183 Children were crushed to death in 1883. It was very much like the Hilsbough Disaster of it's day, but very few people know of it.
Newspaper reports at the time triggered a mood of national outrage and the resulting inquiry led to legislation that public entertainment venues be fitted with a minimum number of outward opening emergency exits, which led to the invention of 'push bar' emergency doors. This law still remains in full force to this day. No one was prosecuted for the disaster.

There have been many disasters, which with time fade from memory, only remembered by relatives of the dead. 50 years ago, we had Aberfan. 116 children, and 28 adults killed. At the time, this awful event was felt by many.

We make a joke about over-zealous health and safety, but life is really much safer in terms of road and workplace accidents.
