Hoping to spend a week in the South West of England this summer ( wife and two kids in check ) and can’t decide whether to use Newquay or St Ives as our base , are both equally impressive in terms of beaches ?, we will hire a car so drive around the county but would like to stay near a great beach with decent amenities nearby
both are excellent for a visit, Newquay is the surfing capital of the South West, whatever you decide expect to encounter lots of traffic, Cornwall's main industry is tourism and it gets real busy especially in the summer.

Would you rate Devon and Dorset above Cornwall?, we will probably take in more than Cornwall but perhaps it has enough on its own for a week, coastal drives and lots of exploring countryside are my thing but the Mrs loves the beach
Looks like we may need to reconsider, car hire is crazy expensive in the south west , we visited north wales and Cheshire and Shropshire last summer so drove across via ferry from Dublin to Holyhead but not really an option for south west
I used to spend my youth surfing in Cornwall, coming from the SE meant that we would have to plan ahead which meant that we would have to 'hope' for good surfing conditions, best times of my life, Cornwall is a beautiful place, stunning beaches with rugged countryside, would spend two weeks at a time every August down there just with a small tent and good company, used to come home feeling fit, healthy and tanned! Also used to surf the North Devon coast, as Paul pointed out Devon is another beautiful place, I don't think you can go far wrong whichever county you end up choosing.
wherever you go in the UK in the holiday season expect to encounter high volume of traffic, it dosent matter where you go the traffic will all be busy.
We used to land at Manchester airport and had the car rented in advance. Then drive south. Cornwall became my favorite place to go. The car rental might be cheaper in the North???
