How about Formby,Ormskirk or as one other poster mentioned the Wirral? Lots of reasonably priced places to live there....I should know I grew up in Ellesmere Port BUT I actually wouldn't recommend there either.... instead there are lots of little village places which are nice..Hooton, Whitby, Neston etc...Anyway, I would have to choose Chester if it was me....good rail link to Liverpool as well.

This may be too late now but here is my list after living there most of my life....

Areas to avoid;
Walton, Kirkdale and Anfield - Worst Areas in Liverpool, also Walton district just names most deprived in UK, very high crime in these areas.
Croxteth - High youth type crime
Norris Green - another **** hole
Toxteth - Better than it was but much better places to live
Kensington - Don't get it confused with the one in London lol
Dingle - See Norris Green
Huyton - Some nice areas but some not so nice.

Places worth looking at IN or very close to Liverpool;
West Derby
Crosby
Woolton
Allerton
Childwall
Formby - a little further out

Good luck, don't listen to what many say, it is a mazing city with a great feel, just avoid the areas mentioned above :-)
