My daughter commented on this the other day. Gone are the hard plastic chairs and big clown. The McDonald's by our old house has changed several times in the last 40 years. Looks almost like an upscale coffee house/sports bar. And they got rid of the giant germ filled children's playhouse.
Seems all the MacDonald outlets around my area have had major renovations to turn their appearance into some kind of Bistro, The food is still the same although they now think highly of their coffee but the seating arrangements are absurd, i think MacDonald has lost sight of its purpose,its a burger joint..
Any one else think this isnt a step in the right direction for MacDonalds .
.
It just goes to show that re-imaging towards the upscale does not work for a restaurant if the food doesn't follow suit. You can have a normal McD offering and a more bistro offering (I've seen this with the Montreal location on Food TV), but just fancy-ing up a building with the same ole food is totally useless.
Right now I have to be convinced to go to fast food burger places because I'm way past sick of the ho-hum fries as side offerings. There is no quality pasta salad or quality mac and cheese (Wendy's had some in test mode but dropped it) or quality baked beans (like you'd find at Wing Stop) or something like zucchini fries, something besides typical tired fries. When I do go to McDonalds these days, it's mainly because they have the best smoothies of the fast food places. The bistro concept could work in certain locations if there were bistro food offerings to jazz up the food menu (especially on side items) like smoothies did for the drink menu.

McDonalds knows what every salesman knows... the product itself doesn't matter nearly as much as the presentation of said product does.
the bistro style look and the mccafe menu are an attempt to compete with the ever-growing starbucks. but i dont think its a good idea overall. its good for mcds to grow and change but its kind of like they are somewhat losing their identity.
Anyone remember the mcdonalds from the 80s movie Mac and Me? That place was awesome with soaring windows lots of greenery and people break dancing between the tables and in the parking lot.

a) One thing McDonald's does right is make coffee;
b) The new restaurant designs are more cozy and less circus-like. Like anything else that lasts beyond a season, McDonald's is changing with changing styles.
Not all that surprising, actually. McDonald's has re-invented itself several times in the last 60-some years.

Same here; the entire restaurant was razed and rebuilt. Seems like a waste of materials, but that's U.S. corporate practice for ya.
While I don't drink their coffee, I do like the new look of McDonalds (as an adult). However, I nostalgically miss the play areas, cartoon characters, and cookies from when I was a kid in the 80s. It's like they "hooked" us as kids and now want to maintain our patronage as adults.
It may be unfashionable to say, but I think McDonalds burgers are great.
