It was prophesized years ago that our suburbs are our future slums. But slums can be gentrified as well.

The Bronx in NY was one of the first truly desirable suburbs in NYC, with mostly middle class Jews living there. It went way downhill and from what I've heard The Bronx is headed upwards again.

Harlem is another example. Heavily gentrified. I stayed in a luxury Hostel there in 2009 and where were all the minorities? Where did they go to?

3 years ago I set off on an adventure trip, to South Central, only using city buses to see it for myself. Where did they all go to? San Bernardino, Hesperia, Victorville, Palmdale, Lancaster, Las Vegas.

I recently rode the Gold Line to East L.A., Where did they all go to?

I got off the Blue Line, not too long ago, at the Compton stop. The feel of danger, where art thou?

With that said, alot of people feel that in the last 10-20 years or so, suburbs that were once nice areas have gone down hill. My question is, with this new trend, will any suburb ever become as bad as Los Angeles suburb of Compton, which went from a nice middle class community to almost 100 murders a year for a population of 95,000.?
Isn't Ferguson that bad. What about East Cleveland.

I'd guess you could find a 10 sq mile section outside or within any major city that would mirror it, though it might not be a fully incorporated town.

East St. Louis Illinois is currently ranked the most dangerous city in the country, with a murder rate of over 100 per 100k. In the middle of last century it was a thriving area and was the 4th largest city in Illinois.
