I tired to jog it in August 2009. Trust me I was scared, and I was a healthy 52 year old at that point.

Yes, it's a beautiful and very successful open storm drain.

Ottawa, the Capital City of Canada has an 8 kilometer path along the Rideau Canal. At this time of year, you can not just walk along either side of the canal, you can walk or skate ON the frozen surface of the canal. It becomes the world's largest skating rink! You can rent ice skates at any of several stands that are on the ice. The canal surface is graded clean by a truck with a plow blade on it, so the surface is pretty smooth for skating. It is a beautiful experience, especially under the lights at night. During Winterlude, the annual winter carnival in February, you can skate along the frozen canal to Dow Lake, where there is a frozen sculpture exhibit.
