Phoenix's Metro:

Average weekday boardings: 33,000

Tremendous waste of money that could have gone to improving existing public transportation (buses). However, I guess it's a lot more politcally attractive to have the opportunity to cut the tape on a new, shiny train.

Anyway, there are plans to extend service of the light rail to University of Phoenix stadium, where the Cardinals play. There are also plans to eventually extend some lines into the western part of the Phoenix metro. While there are a lot of expansion plans, Scottsdale has adamantly rejected any talks of extend the light rail through the city. The mayor has cited that the rail is too costly and would ruin the character of the city's old west-style downtown. I am in complete agreement.

For those that care about CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) ridership numbers, they can be found here.

Deprecated Browser Error

Rail rides for June 2009 was 17,447,772. System rides (rail and buses) for June 2009 was 43,961,540 (yes, more people ride the bus than the rail, I use both equally).

Default Shame us all here! Please!

Here in this "futuristic" city there's nothing on the radar screen for light rail and the only way we're going to get it is through enough visitors coming to this city and complaining, shaming and embarassing us. And we certainly deserve it.

That "kiddie" monorail train from the Sahara to MGM I don't even count.

As more and more cities wisely opt for Light Rail, and people grow accustomed to it, and being met outside the Airport terminal by a train, I'm sure if enough people fly in here, and aren't greeted by a train outside, and loudly complain enough, perhaps some of our myopic leaders will listen.

Onward! A flood of complaint letters to Las Vegas!

Atlanta Rail as it is today:

MARTA has four heavy rail (aka subway) lines with 38 stations.

Though the rail service area only covers two of the five major metro countries, serving a population of 1.8 million, MARTA has 250,900 unique boardings per day.

Atlanta rail in the future:

The projects on this map are a collection of various proposals and currently being built/studied systems.

For the City of Atlanta proper the new lines would be:

The Beltline: Four Light rail line connecting all four MARTA subway lines in a loop.

Four street car lines down Peachtree, Ponce De Leon Ave., Piedmont Avenue, and Martin Luther King/International Ave.

One light rail line loop from the north east section of the city, through the westside, around the eastside to burbs.

In addition, eleven commuter rail lines running on/parallel to freight tracks.

The good news is that most of the additions for the city will probably be built within the next 20 years.

The sad news is that since State government currently has an adversarial relationship with Atlanta, the commuter rail lines will take longer unless we get the right leadership in the governors mansion. The most of the right of way and infrastructure already exist.
