Can someone explain The Bubble, what it is, how it is defined and how it relates to people?

The Bubble is in referrence to Utah County...large Mormon population (about 80% I believe). With BYU being in the center it is kind of its own little world...a bubble from the "real world".

I work in Salt Lake but live in the bubble. I like it that way, but some find the "bubble" suffocating and homogenous...some say the bubble is self-righteous attitude and that may true, but it doesn't bug me (maybe I am self-righteous, who knows?) and we find ways to have a lot of fun...even in the bubble.

If you are looking for a good mix the closer to Salt Lake you get the more variety you will find.

Default The good ole bubble.

I can't define the bubble. You just feel the bubble around you. It's their own little world filled with seven levels of heaven, multiple gods, mysterious gold plates, J.S., the tooth fairy, big foot, and many others....Go to certain areas in Utah Co. (Happy Valley) and you'll see what I mean. I like to call Provo "Mo-Town." I'm not talking about Smokey Robinson either.

The bubble is a strange place....avoid it at all costs! I always shower and cleanse my brain as soon as break the seal.

I could only take the bubble for one summer!

I prefer to avoid Provo unless I want to eat at Gandolphos there.

Oh gosh, another bubble thread! LOL. Well... I lived in the bubble for close to 5 years, and I have to say, I always felt like an outsider. I grew up LDS in California, and truthfully.... there is no explaining to the LDS who grew up in the bubble, that the bubble exists.

It isn't necessarily a bad thing for some people. People who want their kids raised in a large LDS environment, where they are the majority, which makes it easier for some families to keep LDS values, are usually happy in Utah Valley.

I however... want my kids to be raised LDS, but I want them to experience all types of people. I want them to be around more religious diversity, then what I felt was in Utah Valley, while I lived there. Yes there was diversity, but it wasn't as obvious, as in places like even SLC, or outside of Utah.

To put another spin on things.... I also knew non-LDS families, and no longer practising LDS families, who really liked Utah Valley. They didn't want to be a part of the LDS religion, but they were happy with their children growing up around the large LDS influence there, because they saw it as a positive environment for their kids.

But in the end... it isn't the bubble that keeps me out of Utah... it's the SNOW! Don't want to live in Snow EVER again!! However... I really miss the mountains, they are so stunning.

Default Bubble Mormons

I made a comment to an LDS lady at work who recently moved to the Lehi area from Boise that she must enjoy being in Utah with all the other LDS. She responded, "No, the Mormons are different here. They are like Shiite Mormons and we're Sunni Mormons." I thought that explained the Bubble quite well, as well as being hilarious.
