There is a VA Medical Clinic on Chambers Drive in South Ogden. It is outpatient only, not a hospital.

Talking HAFB schools, places to live...

I am a Weber county resident however my two children live in Layton with their mother. They are 13 (boy) and 10 (girl). I am guessing from your post that you are looking at high schools. As far as home prices, there are many areas within a short drive of HAFB to chose from. Layton is not the only option. There is Syracuse, West Point, Kaysville, Farmington, Woods Cross, and even Roy, Riverdale, Washington Terrace.... Home prices are very reasonable. For what it's worth, my sister teaches calculus at a local high school. She enjoys her job, and although there are gangs, they are not as prevalent as in other places in Utah.

Davis County has some good high school's. Syracuse is the newest and has a good reputation. Northridge is also a newer school and has kids from all over Layton and Clearfield attending. I would avoid Clearfield and even Layton. Woods Cross High is a good school. Also, in Weber County there is Bonneville and Roy, but they are older schools with a diverse student body.

You may want to look into Northern Utah Academy for Math, Engineering and Science (NUAMES) see: NUAMES : Northern Utah College for Math, Engineering and Science

There is also Layton Christian Academy which is a private Christian School. Layton Christian Academy - A First Class Private School in Davis County, Utah

There are a lot of good options, but for me, the best bang for the buck is to get college credit while in High School. All schools offer this and it does not cost additional to get credit. I have a friend whose daughter graduated with an associates degree and her high school diploma. She took extra classes, but it's a perk that you can get. Weber State University (credits will transfer to most schools), as well as Utah State offer classes.

As for hospitals, there are some great choices in the area. In Layton there is Davis Hospital while in Ogden there is Ogden Regional and McKay Dee Hospital. In Salt Lake there is the University of Utah, LDS, and many more. There are a number of good insta-care clinics, if you aren't able to go to the base.

Don't buy into the hype that because you are not Mormon you will be outcast. I am not active, but grew up being good friends with kids whose parents attended other churches. There are bad apples, just don't let it get to you.
Welcome to UTAH!

Scott

Do you realize you are responding to a poster who wrote that back in 2007? I suspect in seven years his kids have already gone to high school. He may well have moved out of the area by now, too.

My daughter is spending time at HAFB as outside contractor. She wants to hike but will be alone. Is it safe to hike there? Does anyone have any suggestions about this.? I appreciate any thoughts.

Better to start a new thread than reopen an old one, and this is old indeed.

Anyway, there about 200 gazillion places to hike. Look online or go to REI for a guidebook. Get a map, a compass and learn how to use them. The god of the outdoors punishes those who rely on just a cellphone. "Safety" is rather subjective. If concern is being attacked or molested then I wouldn't hesitate. But hiking alone has other safety issues. In the event of an injury - twisted ankle, bad fall etc - you could find yourself very much alone. Cell coverage is spotty in many areas and you could wait a very long time before seeing anybody. There are also mountain lions. Attacks are rare, but they're most definitely out there. A single person, especially somebody small (child, petite woman) is more likely to be stalked than even 2 people. The lions don't deter people any more than fear of sharks keeps people from swimming in the ocean. But common sense should be used.
