Sounds like a great choice Dan. There are more wildfire in MT now than any other state. Lots of money to be made fighting fires.

I'm late for the reply, but I swear by Herriman. It's quiet, family oriented, and only about 20% seem to be LDS...at least in my neighborhood. Most people have at least 1/4 acre of land, and everything is newly built. Home depot is 10 min away, the grocery is 2 min away, and Jordan Landing (movie theaters, walmart, sears, etc...) is 20 min away. South Town Mall is 15 minutes, along with restraunts.

I don't think there are many teenagers though...it is a fairly younger community. Most kids are 3-12 years old and the oldest kid I've seen around here is about 16...and they are the minority.

Areas to totally avoid unless you want preached to daily:
Pleasant Grove, Provo, Orem, American Fork, Lehi, Nephi...

I currently live in Utah and am LDS and I have lots of non-LDS friends and all of them say that they never have a problem getting preached to. Trust me when i say that you or your family will not get judged, mistreated or anything like that. If you don't want any preaching done, then just let them know and they will respect that just like how they would want you to respect them. Also about the starbucks, that definitly not true.....I know tons of LDS people who go to starbucks. Utah is a really great place to live, I really hate it when people say it's just a Mormon state and you'll get hackled if you aren't....really it isn't and no you will DEFINITLY NOT GET HACKLED. They should try living here and see how great of a place it is and how much diversity there is.

I doubt there are any non-LSD communities in Utah. However if you are looking for someplace close to Southern Utah I'd suggest Mesquite. It's a neat lttle casino/retirement town about 45 minutes south of St. George. I've heard from many LDS folks that Mesquite is the only place Mormons don't recognized each other. Took me a while to get that one.

I have been reading the responses on this site, hoping to secure more information about moving to a new location in late midlife. I am a 4th generation Kansas Citian, having a great grandfather that homesteaded here when it was just a small cow town. I am well traveled, live openly acceptanant of diversity in culture, race, faith, etc. Kansas City is a large melting pot of all of these diversities, LDS friends included. Health issues, severe asthma, allergies, the onset of arthritis, has caused doctors to advise higher altitude, less dense humidity, and continuance of walking, hicking, bike riding, etc.

Checked out Ariz., N. Mexico, now Utah. Am impressed with Utah. I am Catholic and would like to be close to a community that is as acceptant of my choice in faith as much as I am of theirs without the unnecessary conflicts or prejudices, so that I can attend church unhampered and freely. I am still very active, ride bikes, raft, hike and appreciate the outdoors. High humidity in Kansas City, plus low altitude, ice storms, tornados, and excessive pollen must become a thing of the past. Appreciate the commentary regarding Stansbury Park, Park City, and the Avenues in SLC. There is what appears to be a lovely retirement community for active over 55 folks in Farmington. I do not know much about this area, but considered it. Please, if anyone could be more informative of smaller cosmopolitan communities, suitable for an artist, writer, outgoing midlife adventurer considering the 2nd half of life living without the fear of being a weather-trapped shutin in the Kansas/Missouri, midwest area, I would be deeply appreciative. Thanks for the comments from kaytidid, lovedirt, and EricM. Await replies to startingover2.

I Live In Moroni and Im Not LDS I haven't had any problems with the people around here the dont preach or treat my family any different. the schools are great kids have lots of friends. So if your going to move this is the right place for you plus housing is cheaper its a small town in Sanpete county. and only 30mins from Utah county. Actually Theres a large house on Main Street thats over 2000sq ft thats selling for only $120000 which is very nice and on .38ac. see the prices are right plus the area is growing with more busineses and jobs so would be a place to live. the town is small about 3000-5000 people.

However, on her first day she was invited by her classmates to accompany them to seminary (the LDS church builds these next to all public schools for LDS kids to go to when not in class or for optional religious classes). She told the other girls she was Episcopal and stayed at school.

From then on she was ostracized by the girls most similar to her in all ways but religion. Coming from a state that was predominately Souithern Baptist, we did not anticipate that religion would be a problem. We were wrong and, if we had it to do over again, we would not have moved to Utah or, if we had, we would have initially bought in Salt Lake and put her in a private school or bought ih Park City.

I just had to comment on this one.

Making a move in high school is tough on any kid and fitting in at a new school is almost always a challenge.

My daughter is going through it right now. She was a NHS officer, student body officer, varsity cheerleader, had tons of friends, and absolutely loved her old HS.
Even though she also made varsity cheer at the new school; so didn't go in completely cold, she is still feeling very ostracized and left out. She has yet to find any friends to hang out with outside of school. Thank goodness she at least has aquaintances to eat with at lunch. It has been rough though, believe me!
Anyway, religion has nothing to do with it in her case as there really is no predominant religion where we are.

Personally I think a lot of the fitting in at school complaints probably have more to do with teenage behavior in general than LDS teenage behavior specifically.

FWIW my niece has had very few problems fitting in at her Utah high school and she is not LDS. But she has also lived in the same area and attended school with the same kids since she was in 5th grade. That's the key IMO.
I will concede that one boy, who rumour had it wanted to take her to prom, was not allowed to ask her out because she was not LDS. She said she was actually glad since she was trying to come up with a way to nicely turn him down anyway.

Sorry to veer OT a bit here, I just had to comment.

any non-LDS communities in utah that one was funny bro your moving to UTAH every communities in utah is LDS but for a person who is non mormon you should consider living in West Valley City or Salt Lake City. Overall you shouldn't have a problem living out there it's nothing to worry about you should be just fine but you should just come to visit Utah and get a feel of the area before moving wish you the best of luck.
